As social media usage has become increasingly widespread, social media has to a large extent come to be subjected to commercialization by marketing companies and advertising agencies.[136] Christofer Laurell, a digital marketing researcher, suggested that the social media landscape currently consists of three types of places because of this development: consumer-dominated places, professionally dominated places and places undergoing commercialization.[137] As social media becomes commercialized, this process have been shown to create novel forms of value networks stretching between consumer and producer[138] in which a combination of personal, private and commercial contents are created.[139] The commercial development of social media has been criticized as the actions of consumers in these settings has become increasingly value-creating, for example when consumers contribute to the marketing and branding of specific products by posting positive reviews. As such, value-creating activities also increase the value of a specific product, which could, according to the marketing professors Bernad Cova and Daniele Dalli, lead to what they refer to as "double exploitation".[140] Companies are getting consumers to create content for the companies' websites for which the consumers are not paid.

Putting aside the CEO's past, several people have pointed out that some of Vero's employees appear to be Russian. Given Russia's attempts to use social media to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election, some are questioning whether it's wise to trust a social media app with potential Russian ties.

For example, an e-commerce or travel business, being highly visual, can get a lot of value from a strong presence on Instagram or Pinterest. A business-to-business or marketing company might find more leverage in Twitter or Linkedin.

Path aimed to capitalize on Facebook backlash by offering a return to the original premise of a social network: Just you and your friends, and that's it - no games, no ads, no losers you met in a bar "poking" you. Path was the private villa to Facebook's out-of-control pool party. The idea had merit, but Path was even more notable for its design, brandishing animated action buttons and orderly layering long before the concepts went mainstream with iOS 7 and Google's Material. Path's premise was ultimately its undoing, however: By limiting the number of people you could connect with, it never achieved "the network effect" and was ingloriously sold to a South Korean Internet company five years after launch.

Currently the most popular instant messaging provider worldwide, WhatsApp is a cross-platform app that uses your internet connection or data plan to send and receive messages. Users can send messages to individuals or groups using text, photos, videos and even voice messages. Unlike Kik and other popular messaging apps, WhatsApp uses your phone number rather than usernames or pins (despite being an alternative to SMS). Users can allow WhatsApp to connect to their phone's address book so that their contacts can be seamlessly transferred to the app. The app also offers a few customizable features like profiles, wallpapers and notification sounds. I'm just starting out and really didn't know what a social media plan was. You're right, I use social media everyday and interact just fine, but for some reason when you're building a company it's a lot harder because that personal connection isn't there. This had some great points, thankyou

My son switched from txt to Kik about a month ago and it really threw me for a loop. I was used to randomly checking his texts, but took me a couple of weeks to realize his text inbox was empty because he had switched to a new app. He texts constantly, usually to girls, and his content is too provocative and sometimes completely crosses the line. As much as we redirect him and counsel him and consequence him on this, he seems to keep doing whatever he can get away with. Now, my husband and I are thinking of uninstalling all of his apps except ones for productivity, like calendar and checklists. we may still allow the camera, but that seems harmless as long as there's no app to post the actual pics. I'm wondering if this move will be so extreme that it starts a tug of war. Any thoughts?

How do you feel when people comment on your social media posts? Awesome, right? A comment is or some form of engagement is usually a sign that people love your social media content. Timehop's nostalgia-triggering app launched on iOS in 2012 and on Android in 2014. It pulls archives from your accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and more to show you what happened on that same day in previous years. Thanks to hashtags like #TBT and #FBF, Timehop had no problem gaining popularity. In fact, it was such a winning concept that Facebook joined in on the blast-from-the-past movement and introduced its "On This Day" feature. Timehop responded with an April Fools' joke by announcing the fake app Timebook, calling Facebook out for essentially stealing its idea. The app design is relatively simple, but it hasn't changed much over the years. If Timehop wants to keep up with the times, it'll have to find new ways to keep users engaged.
