The Crime Officer-in-Charge of Kohuwala Police station was suspended after an investigation related to an incident of a drug addict stabbing a bar owner while the OIC was present at the crime scene.
This drug addict had stabbed the bar owner after the latter refused to give him a bottle of arrack in the presence of Kohuwala police Crimes OIC.
The suspension letter was issued on Monday (19) by Assistant Superintendent of Police, who investigated the incident under the direction of Mount Lavinia SSP Mangala Dehideniya.
The stabbing took place on the night December 16. A person named Mahesh Fonseka, a resident of Bhathiya Mawatha, Kalubowila who is addicted to drugs and often hangs out with the police officers in Kohuwala police station stabbed the owner. He went to the liquor store in Dutugemunu Street in Kohuwala that night and asked the owner to supply a bottle of liquor free on the request of the police officer.
The owner of the liquor store, Ranjith Dayalal, a resident of Madapatha, Piliyandala refused to provide alcohol without money. The drug addict left the place after an argument with the owner, stating that he would accompany the OIC.
About 15 minutes after that, the Crime Division OIC, Sub-Inspector Ashoka Namal Kumara came to the liquor store on a motorcycle in civilian clothes and while he was talking to Ranjith Dayalal, Fonseka stabbed Dayalal, investigations revealed.
Fonseka, who stabbed Dayalal is absconding. Instead of arresting the drug addict, police used him for minor work in the police station. Investigations have also revealed that the senior police officers had not been informed about this incident. It was later revealed that the suspect had been arrested after information about this was spread through the media. A senior police officer said that the suspension of the service of the OIC had been effected after the investigation and a crime investigation would also be initiated against this officer.
