KIS 70th Anniversary Marked

A series of events on September 30 (Friday) and October 1 (Saturday) marked the 70th anniversary of Kim Il Sung (Kim Il-so’ng) University.    On September 27 (Tuesday), Kim Jong Un (Kim Cho’ng-u’n sent a letter to KISU faculty and students.

A central report meeting was held at the April 25 House of Culture in Pyongyang on September 30.  Among those in attendance were Supreme People’s Assembly [SPA] Presidium President Kim Yong Nam [Kim Yo’ng-nam], DPRK Premier Pak Pong Ju [Pak Pong-chu], Workers’ Party of Korea [WPK] Vice Chairman and Director of Propaganda and Agitation Kim Ki Nam [Kim Ki-nam], WPK Vice Chairman for Science and Education and SPA Speaker (chairman) Choe Thae Bok [Ch’oe T’ae-pok], Pyongyang WPK City Committee Chairman Kim Su Gil [Kim Su-kil], WPK Organization Guidance Department Senior Deputy Director Jo Yon Jun [Cho Yo’n-chun], along with KISU administration, faculty and students, WPK and DPRK Government officials, senior officials of ministries, state institutions, Pyongyang universities, invited foreign guests, foreign students studying in the DPRK and others.

Minister of Higher Education and KISU President Thae Hyong Chol [T’ae Hyo’ng-ch’o’l] delivered a report.  According to KCNA, he said:

The glorious seven decade-long history of Kim Il Sung University is the proud course in which it has developed into the highest seat of Chuch’e-oriented education and science under the care of the peerlessly great persons of Mt. Paektu.

President Kim Il Sung was the founder of the university and peerless patriot who developed the university into the national treasure of Chuch’e Korea and pride of the nation.

Kim Il Sung provided concrete guidance over the founding of the university ranging from selection of students to contents and methods of education and the issue of laying material and technical foundation for education and sending of written requests with a view to building competent teaching staff.  Thanks to his leadership Kim Il Sung University, the first people’s university in the history of the nation spanning 5 000 years, was founded on October 1, Chuch’e 35 (1946).

Leader Kim Jong Il (Kim Cho’ng-il) was the outstanding leader and eternal teacher who glorified Kim Il Sung University as the university of the leader and the Party.

After making the historic pledge on Ryongnam Hill on September 1, Chuch’e 49 (1960), Kim Jong Il conducted his revolutionary activities at the university, energetically leading the university to conduct all activities as required by the idea and intention of the President.

Kim Il Sung University which has covered the victorious and glorious path under the leadership of the great leaders, is now ushering in a golden age in its development under the loving care of Marshal Kim Jong Un (Kim Cho’ng-u’n).

Kim Jong Un sent a letter “On the Basic Tasks Facing Kim Il Sung University in the New Era of the Juche Revolution” to the teaching staff and students of the university on its 70th founding anniversary. He thus unrolled a grand blueprint for further developing the university into the first-class university in the world in line with its high prestige as the revolutionary university of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il.

All the officials, teaching staff and students of the university should glorify the university as the eternal university of the great leaders and work hard to rank itself among the first-class universities in the world by implementing the tasks set forth by Kim Jong Un in his letter.

On October 1, senior officials of the central leadership visited an Educational and Scientific Exhibition at the university campaign.  Visiting the exhibition were Kim Yong Nam, Kim Ki Nam, Choe Thae Bok, among others.  According to KCNA, they “looked round various places of the exhibition, being briefed on the achievements made by teachers, researchers and students of the university in education and scientific researches.”  They also attended sports competitions with KISU administrators, faculty and students.  University students “
