Kingsman: The Secret Service Updates the Classic Gentleman Spy

Stir two ounces of gin with a half ounce vermouth for ten seconds while staring at a bottle of vintage Raymond Ragnaud. That's how you make a modern gentleman spy movie like Kingsman: The Secret Service. An adaptation of the acclaimed comic book The Secret Service by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, Kingsman: The Secret Service puts a fun take to the grim and serious spy flick formula made popular by James Bond and Jason Bourne. And this is not another Austin Powers-type movie, either (although Micheal Caine stars in this film as well). Here are my top three reasons why I highly recommend Kingsman:

1. Colin Firth stars in this film.

Colin Firth made an impression when he starred as Mr Darcy in the 1995 TV adaptation of Pride and prejudice, and again when he portrayed Bridget Jones' love interest (also Mr Darcy), so yes, I was already expecting him to be cool, calm and collected. In Kingsman, Colin Firth is master spy Galahad who recruits a fellow spy's son, Eggsy, played by up and coming star Taron Egerton. Eggsy soon learns of the existence of Kingsman, an independent intelligence agency dedicated to ensuring that the world is safe from the bad guys.

2. Violence is made fun.

To be clear, I don't condone violence. I just feel that of all the heavily violent, action-packed films, Kingsman emerges as a one-of-a-kind movie to watch. For one thing, it reminds me a lot of Kickass! Just like Kickass, Kingsman also has that uncanny ability to make violence seem fun! This R-16 movie has a lot of dismemberment and cussing, and yet it provides a spectacular visual feast akin to that amusing Quicksilver rescue scene in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Think slow-mo scenes and close-ups.

3. There are no draggy parts.

It's a 129-minute film and yet I did not get bored (for comparison, I wasn't amused by Jupiter Ascending or that last movie of The Hobbit trilogy), so there's that. I also enjoyed the dry, British humor A LOT! So really, just watch “Kingsman: The Secret Service” TODAY in theaters nationwide! I think it will look awesome in 3D too!
