This week’s episode of Killjoys entitled “Baby, Face Killer” (4×06) focused primarily on Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) working with Johnny Jaqobis (Aaron Ashmore) sorting through the story in her head that Khlyen (Rob Stewart) left in her head in order to figure out the clues left behind while D’avin Jaqobis (Luke Macfarlane) struggles with being a dad to his now teenaged son, Jaq/Ozzman Kin Rit (Jaedan Noel).
Dutch and Johnny are able to bring Dutch’s memories up visually so that Johnny can help her go through memories and figure out the differences in the story that Khlyen put in her head. They are still docked at Utopia and using Mano’s (Matthew Gouveia) technology to try to help them find out who the woman that Dutch had originally thought was the assassin on their first mission is, however this ends up setting off an alert and only makes more trouble for them and gives them no name to put to the picture. The second thing they find in Dutch’s memories is a symbol that isn’t the RAC symbol placed on Big Joe’s (Tony Nappo) badge. The third clue is the sound of a pulsar imprinted on the memory, which Johnny has to have searched for since they’re all unique.
We see our first glimpse into the green space since Dutch has come back. Aneela is still fighting The Lady in Khlyen’s form and we see that she’s injured…and it’s the same way that Dutch is also injured out in the real world. This leaves us unsure if this means that Aneela is breaking mentally and physically or just the reminder that if Aneela dies then so does Dutch.
Delle Seyah Kendry (Mayko Nguyen) is back to being the Qreshi royal that we’re used to. She names the Jaqobis boy, Ozzman Kin Rit which is supposed to be after her grandfather and then what we have to assume is Aneela’s surname. The only last name we’d gotten thus far about Khlyen or Aneela (Hannah John-Kamen) is that Dutch had been named after Aneela’s mother, Yalena Yardeen. I had assumed that because in the harem, Khlyen had made a big deal about the Yardeeni name being restored to a baby Dutch that that was the Qreshi surname. So, perhaps both Yalena and Khlyen were of noble houses and Kin Rit is Khlyen’s surname and possibly the more notable house that was striped from Qreshi history as stated in previous episodes. Hopefully we’ll find out more about all of this soon. Delle Seyah is just up and leaving to go back to Qresh, or so that’s what everyone believes…her true destination is still unknown to us. Before she leaves, though she’s trying to teach him some basic things about being royalty which really isn’t going over well. There’s this very awkward moment with Ozzman when she’s trying to say goodbye and D’avin is standing there basically being awkward as well and making faces at Delle Seyah’s motherliness. One of the standouts of this exchange is when Ozzman hugs her and she tells him that “physical contact is for the poor” and just sort of taps him with her hands.
Zeph (Kelly McCormack) is still completely convinced that something’s wrong with Pippin Foster (Atticus Mitchell), who is still restrained and sedated. After a conversation with Dutch and D’avin who are not sure that they can ever trust Pip again, Zeph decides that it would be best for Pip if she steals him away on the Black Root ship, leaving Lucy (voiced by Tamsen McDonough) and putting distance between them. She believes that if she can get back to the Armada that she can help him. That is…until she finds the green plasma born spider in his brain. It isn’t until a third into the episode that Team Awesome Force realize that Zeph has left the ship with Pip with them distracted on two fronts. Since they’re away from everyone, Zeph wakes him up. Zeph decides she has to go old school in order to get the spider out of Pip, which almost kills him. All he wants is for Zeph to trust him again, which means he doesn’t care what she has to do to kill the spider in his head. In the end, Zeph realizes that if the spider dies then Pip dies and that even though she’s short circuited it from being able to control him anymore that it has a short lifespan outside the green. No matter, Zeph is still determined to find a way to keep him alive.
D’avin feels the need to make sure that his son has some self defense training and enlists Dutch,
On Utopia, The Hunter (Shaun Benson) kills Mano and then uses him to draw the team to him with the promise of new information. D’avin finds Mano dead while Dutch attempts to use the crowded and loud Utopia in order to work on training the boy more and she’s even more frustrated than he is with his lack of learning what she’s trying to teach him. He actually uses some special sense to save Dutch from being shot and he has no idea how he did it. He tells her that he can’t explain it, that he just knows things. The Hunter successfully separates Dutch from the Jaqobis even if it’s with the boy in tow and cuts her communications off leaving her stuck with a teenager with a lot of questions that she doesn’t feel like she has the time or right to answer. “I’m used to being lied to, so I’m going to tell you the truth,” Dutch finally tells him and explains that Aneela, who is his other mother, made her. Lucy finds the pulsar that they’d been looking for, so Johnny is feeling great for figuring out one of the
pieces. The Jaqobis brothers come to the rescue and they think they have The Hunter (who has the symbol they saw in Dutch’s memories tattooed on his neck) when he manages to get away. They are convinced that The Hunter was sent there by The Lady even though he’s not Hullen and are convinced that the only thing they can do is to invoke the assassin’s code of the white blade. The Hunter refers to the woman they’re looking for as a colleague of theirs and refer to themselves as protectors. When things go south at the white blade, the Jaqobis go to leave the ship and find out that the boy is gone…and he ends up taking down The Hunter with a tranq before he can stab Dutch.
D’av is struggling to be a dad during this entire episode, which is adorable and from what we know about the Jaqobis’ childhood it’s clear as to why he’s so stressed about doing the right thing. He scolds him about the incident at the white blade while Dutch praises him and is clearly proud of him. Dutch pulls out her old blades and feels like she has to interrogate him and make him talk because otherwise she loses everyone she loves. The boy walks in and instead of telling him to leave, Dutch insists that he come and learn with her. This is very much again likely a glimpse into what Dutch went through being taught by Khlyen…luckily D’avin walks in and stops it before it goes forward.
D’avin and Dutch discuss the fact that what Khlyen did to her when she was younger was wrong and D’av cites it as abuse. She defends Khlyen because she now feels like she understands that he trained her in order to survive. She wants to train the boy to be a weapon against The Lady, feeling that’s what he was made for because of his gifts and D’avin is completely against that. I found the conversation interesting between them because in the past there’s been times where D’avin did defend Khlyen.
At the end of the episode, the boy decides to chose his own name. He wants to be called Jaqobis (though Jaq for short), which is heavily foreshadowed throughout the entire episode. Delle Seyah says that he’s acting like a Jaqobis at the beginning like it’s the most horrible thing she could wish for while everyone else uses it as praise for what he’s done. I think it’s also his finally having this sense of family and possibly of where he belongs. So, D’avin seems more than okay with his son being called Jaq Kin Rit (though who knows what Delle Seyah will say when she finds out). This is also when D’avin decides to make the move to pack up and leave Lucy with his son, likely to get far away from there and the war. This took me by surprise but at the same time, there was a seriously big line crossed between D’avin and Dutch when it came to his son. It will be interesting to see how Dutch and Johnny find out and their reactions to it.
