‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Designer Sues Apple Studios for Discrimination and Credit Erasure

Posted on the 11 June 2024 by Sandeep Malik

Apple Studios has been sued by Native American costume designer Kristi Marie Hoffman for excluding her from award consideration for her work on “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Hoffman alleges the studio retaliated against her after she previously raised complaints about discrimination on set.

Hoffman, who worked as an assistant costume designer on the film, claims she faced racial discrimination during production. In 2022, she reached a confidential settlement with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission regarding her complaint.

Hoffman asserts that Apple Studios “attempted to erase her contributions” by not giving her proper credit for her work. Despite being listed as the first assistant costume designer and nominated for the Costume Designers Guild Awards, she alleges lead designer Jacqueline West requested her credit be removed. The Costume Designers Guild also found her credit removal to be improper.

Throughout the numerous award nominations for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Apple collaborated with West and the Costume Designers Guild to promote the film and its costume design, Hoffman states in her lawsuit filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court.

She claims to have conducted most of the research and costume design for the film, but her contributions were “completely ignored.”

Having been in the film and TV industry since around 2004, Hoffman has contributed to many productions and felt a personal connection to “Killers of the Flower Moon” as a film about Native Americans. However, she endured discriminatory conduct on set and was subsequently discredited for her work during the film’s promotion and release, while ads celebrated West and another designer, O’Keefe, for the results of her hard work.
