Kevin Smith, actor, and director, has announced that his upcoming film would be released as a limited non-fungible token, a first for the world (NFT).
Kevin Smith’s long-awaited next film is finally being released, but only a select handful will be allowed to see it. The comedy-horror anthology “KillRoy Was Here” will be distributed exclusively through 5,555 NFTs.
Within the next three months, the “KillRoy” NFTs will be available on the Legendao platform. They’ll include the film itself, behind-the-scenes footage, a commentary track, and exclusive artwork. Without the NFT’s unique “crypto key,” no one else will be able to see the video.
This is the film’s primary distribution method at the present, so Smith fans should not anticipate seeing it in a theater or on Netflix.
Smith unveiled the trailer for “KillRoy Was Here” during a virtual Comic-Con in summer 2020. The title figure is inspired by the 1940s graffiti movement “Kilroy was here”: A doodle of a balding man staring over a wall, his large nose plainly extended.
Smith drew comparisons between it and George A. Romero’s 1982 anthology “Creepshow” and Brad Miska’s 2012 movie “V/H/S.” The clip showed children screaming obscenities, an alligator hunter, an old woman with a weed-growing business, a pedophile priest, and plenty of gore.
The road to release for the film has been lengthy and complicated. Smith and Andrew McElfresh collaborated on the script, which was originally intended to concentrate on Krampus’s deeds before Michael Dougherty made a film about the famous beast.
Smith started working on “KillRoy” with students from Ringling College of Art and Design before his heart attack in 2018. After his recuperation, he shelved the project and instead produced and published “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot” in 2019.
According to an official press release, the “KillRoy” NFT also enables art collectors to collaborate in the sequel’s production.
“When you buy the KillRoy NFT, you have exclusive access to the film,” Smith noted in a release. “However, the KillRoy you get is YOUR KillRoy, which means you can do anything you want with him: produce your own film, turn him into a cartoon, or license him for lunchboxes!” We started the tale; now it’s up to you to conclude it with your own interpretation of our star! The videos and animation created by the KillRoy NFT owners using their own KillRoys will comprise the bulk of our second anthology, along with a new chapter I’ll shoot next year. The KillRoy NFT offers an exciting and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go from art collector to collaborator!”
Hollywood has begun to adopt NFTs in the last year, amidst a blockchain-based technical boom. According to filmmakers and executives, NFTs provide artists a new way to connect with their viewers, receive money, build new distribution channels, and engage fans in the creative process.
