On Tuesday, September 4th country singer Kellie Pickler became the newest member of the “pop stars with shaved heads” club. However, unlike the other members of the club, like Brittany Spears, who’s shaved head was a result of one of many mental breakdowns, Pickler’s decision to shave her head was definitely justified.
The American Idol, Season 5, sixth place winner, made the decision to shave her head to support her childhood friend, Summer Holt Miller who was diagnosed with breast cancer early this summer. Pickler shaved her head as Good Morning America cameras rolled, and the results were aired for the world to see on Wednesday morning.
Their decision to shave their heads together on air was made in hopes that it would spread awareness of the importance of not waiting until your 40 to get a mammogram. Miller told Good Morning America Hosts, “If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it.” With Breast Cancer Awareness Month right around the corner, the two young women hope to have a lasting impression on others about the urgency of early detection.
“According to the CDC, breast cancer is most common form of cancer among women and the second leading cause of death among women.” Additionally, women who are lucky enough to detect their breast cancer early on, like Miller did, have a much higher chance of survival than those who do not.
I applaud Kellie Pickler for her bold move. I think she has shown women around the world that a women’s hair is just an accessory, and you can be just as beautiful, if not more beautiful without it, because a person’s beauty comes from within.
