According to the Puranas, Shiva appeared in the form of Jyotirlinga in twelve places to save the earth. Kedarnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. It is also one of the Char Dhams of Uttarakhand and is also one of the Panch Kedar. Panch Kedar includes Kedarnath, Rudranath, Kalpeshwar, Madmaheshwar and Tungnath. Kedarnath Temple is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, the doors of Kedarnath are open for the devotees for six months in a year and remain closed for six months due to heavy snowfall in winters. Kedarnath Temple is surrounded by Chorabari Glacier. The temple is situated in the middle of Mandakini and Saraswati river. Chorabari Kund is the source of Mandakini river. The height of Kedarnath temple is 3,553 meters above sea level. The darshan of Shiva can be done from 5:00 to 2:00 in the morning and from 3:00 to 9:00 in the evening. The temple is built in the Katyuhari style. The temple is built with brown colored stones. The platform of the temple is made of wood. A gold urn is placed on its summit. Inside the temple there is a hall with images of Goddess Parvati, Pancha Pandavas and Draupadi. Shivling is worshiped in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Near the door there is a Nandi made of stone.
