Heartstrings is set in a Cultural Arts College and tells us a story about its students who are going after their dreams with much hard work and determination while experiencing friendship, intrigue and romance.
Lee Kyu Won (Park Shin Hye) plays the Gayageum*. She is a kindhearted and bubbly girl from the Traditional Music Department and a member of the "Windflower", an all-girl ensemble that plays only traditional Korean musical instruments. Her grandfather is a famous Pansori** prodigy and teacher who wants her to follow his footsteps, thus, preventing her from being influenced by modern music.
Lee Shin (Jung Yong Hwa) attends the Contemporary Music Department. He plays the guitar and is the vocalist of the college's local idol band, "The Stupid". Because of his fame and looks, he is ridiculously chased by many girls in spite of his disinterest and indifference.
Due to a misunderstanding and their colliding tempers, Lee Kyu Won and Lee Shin agreed on a bet. The two of them and their groups are to face each other off in a battle of the bands. The loser of the contest will become the winner's slave for a month. The bet grew out of proportion and they eventually had to do it in front of the entire school body. But because one of her strings snapped in the middle of their performance, Lee Kyu Won lost the bet and had to suffer the consequences as well as her developing attraction to Lee Shin.Will she survive the month with her heart intact? And is traditional music and the Gayageum* her real calling?
