Kate Winslet recently reflected on her experiences filming the 1997 blockbuster Titanic. During a rewatch of iconic scenes from the movie in a Vanity Fair video, the 48-year-old Oscar-winning actress humorously described the challenges of kissing Leonardo DiCaprio.
“Quite the charmer, isn’t he? No wonder every young girl in the world dreamt of a kiss from Leonardo DiCaprio,” Winslet quipped. “But reality didn’t quite match the hype.”
She explained how they repeatedly filmed the kissing scene, ensuring their makeup remained flawless. “We kept doing this kiss, and I had a lot of pale makeup on. Between takes, I had to do our makeup checks — on both of us — and I would end up looking like I’d been sucking on a caramel chocolate bar because his makeup would come off on me.”
Winslet also recalled how her makeup made Leonardo look like something was missing from his face. “Oh God, it was such a mess.”
During the video, she detailed the difficulties encountered while filming the scene, primarily stemming from the unconventional setting and lighting challenges. “Leo’s constant laughter meant we had to redo the scene around four times. Director James Cameron insisted on a very specific lighting setup, but the shifting sunsets caused frequent delays.”
She continued, “This was a section of the ship, not part of the actual set. We had to climb up a ladder to get to it, and hair and makeup couldn’t reach us. What you wouldn’t know is that Leo had to lie on sunbeds and wear a lot of fake tan makeup.”
Despite the challenges, Titanic became a huge success, winning 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
