Kandy Overpower Army 46-8

Defending league champions Kandy SC continued their dominance in the local rugby scene as they beat Army SC in their first game of the Nippon Paint Inter Club Rugby League 2022-2023 at Nittawela grounds, by 46 points came off three goals and five tries to eight a try and a penalty by the visitors.

From the blast of referee Ravin Alexander’s whistle, it was nice to see Kandy S.C. were seen, running, rucking the ball with their backs giving a good display, and in the 10th minute Lavanga Perera scored a superb try which went unconverted and in the 12th minute Kavindu Perera scored Kandy SC’s second try and Tharinda Ratwatte did the kicking part to give them 12 points and in the 15th minute Army SC scored off a penalty coming from the boot of Dilshan Perera.

Then again Kandy SC scored through Sanushka Abeywickrema and Thrarinda Ratwatte made the conversion (19-3). Then the Solders were able to score a try through Sudaraka Dikkumbura 19-8.

Then another try for Kandy SC came from Dinal Ekanayake and the extra points were added by Tharinda Ratwatte 26-8 and just before half time Lavanga Perera scored his second try and which was unconverted just before half-time to make 31/8 at lemons, the first half was entirely dominated by the Nittawela boys, who were excellent in every department and rattled the Soldiers.

The second half too, was entirely dominated by the winners and went even further ahead with tries by Malitha Wijesundara, Lakshita Ranaweera and Chathuranga Perera, all of which were unconverted.

Kandy SC side who are are playing at their best will be meeting CR & FC on Saturday December 17 at Longden Place, after the win Kandy SC’s head coach, Fazil Marija said: “I’m very pleased with the performance and proud of the effort from the players.”
