A quick post this morning to fill you in on my newest excitement. I created this smoothie on a whim the other morning when I needed something quick and filling to take out the door with me, and had mountains of kale for a smoothie, but not much fruit. It was so good that I’ve been recreating it to drink again every day since. It was even proclaimed tasty by a true kale skeptic. (He hasn’t even been convinced by massaged kale yet – it’s a serious case! :) )
A quick note on the inclusion of hemp seeds, to remind you why I use them in there. As I’ve written about before, hemp is another one of those crazy superfoods, and smoothies are an easy way to add the seeds to your diet. Plus they make the smoothie creamy, just like using a non-dairy milk would. They’re also good for sprinkling on salads, on top of stir fries… pretty much anything you can think of. I even discovered a new snack of roasted hemp seeds at Natural Products Expo this week – I will report back once I try them. And maybe try to create my own!
So what makes hemp such a superfood? Well, it’s a complete protein, filled with Omega-3s, and alkalizing to boot. Given its perfect proportions and rich nutrient profile, hemp has even been called the most nutritious and easily digestible food on the planet. According to Brendan Brazier in Thrive, it is the only source of the amino acid Edestin, which is “considered an integral part of our DNA,” and therefore “makes hemp the closest plant source to our own human amino acid profile” – which is what makes it so perfectly digestible.
Try it out yourself and let me know what you think. And for now, please enjoy this seriously delicious smoothie. :)
