K7 & K10: LG’s First Made in India Smartphones

Posted on the 15 April 2016 by Jyoti Arora @Jy0tiAr0ra

LG recently launched K7 and K10 smartphone devices that are first of LG's new K series. K7 and K10 are both affordable smartphones that are 'made for India.' But even more importantly, they are also LG's first smartphones that are ' Made in India.' With the launch of these two 'made in India' smartphones, LG has shown its support for the Make in India program launched by our Prime Minister, Shree Narendra Modi.

Speaking about LG's commitment to participate in India's Make in India initiative, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister, Communications and IT, Government of India, said, "The Indian digital ecosystem will be a $1trillion economy in the next 5 years with $400bn contribution from smartphones and electronics manufacturing, 350Bn from IT&ITES enables services and $250Bn from Communications services. LG is a large global brand name and we are very excited that they have chosen to manufacture mobile handsets from India. With LG smartphones consumers will have access to governance, information and knowledge in the hands."

K7 and K10 have many similarities. The features in both smartphones are almost same. But as K7 is priced less than K10, its specifications are also lighter than K10.

LG K10:

K10 is the bigger smartphone of the two. It has 5.3-inch HD In-cell Touch display with 2.5D Arc design. The in-cell touch screen gives the smartphone better visibility in bright sunlight. It also helps in keeping the display usable to some extent even if the screen is broken. It measures 144.7 x 73.6 x 8.7mm and has LG's new glossy 'pebble design' at the sides which makes the sides feel rounded and smooth. The back panel is scratch-resistant and has a knitted texture that makes the device feel more secure in hand. K10 is available in White / Indigo / Gold colour options.

K10 is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB ROM. These specifications are quite decent and should ensure smooth performance and ample storage space. K10 is powered by 2,300mAh battery. It is a 4G LTE device with VoLTE and VoWiFi capability. The rear camera of K10 is 13 MP and the front camera is 5MP. The camera features include gesture shot and front camera flash.

LG K10 is priced at Rs. 13,500.

One major attraction of LG K10 is its Smart Quick Cover that LG is giving away for free with every K10 device. The cover has a very unique side bar. That is, on its right side edge it has a sort of window across its length. This window shows notifications like time, day, alarms and caller information. Users can also accept or reject a call from this flipcover window, without opening the cover. Of course, this is similar to circular or square windows that flip covers of some other phones have too. But having this window at the side, LG has very cunningly given the window more style and made it hint at the edge display of higher priced Samsung Galaxy Edge devices.

LG K7:

K7 is smaller than K10, but it isn't a small device either. It measures 1 42.7 x 72.6 x 8.6mm and has 5.0-inch In-cell Touch display. In design, it is very similar to K10 featuring same 2.5D Arc Glass, glossy pebble sides and textured back. However, it does vary a lot in specifications from K10. It has Qualcomm Snapdragon, 1.5 GB RAM and 8GB ROM. This sounds rather less for a device that costs near to ten thousand. These days, we have companies offering a lot more than such specification set for this price point. But of course, they don't enjoy the LG brand value. Anyway, K7 is powered by 2,125mAh and it too is a 4GLTE device capable of VoLTE and VoWiFi. Its rear as well as front camera in 5MP. It too has selfie flash.

K7 is available in Titan / Gold / White colour options at the price of Rs. 9,500.

Both K7 and K10 have some common features that add to their user experience. K7 and K10 have LG's Rear Key design. These rear keys help LG to give their smartphones smoother sides as there are no buttons on the sides. These rear keys work as camera control and volume rocker. They can also be used to activate the Fast Snapshot feature for faster photo clicking.

K7 and K10 also have 2.5D Arc Glass display. That is, their display has slightly curved edges. The curves are barely noticeable but they do enhance the viewing experience. The display of both the devices has In-cell Touch technology. This gives the display better visibility in bright light conditions. Also, the display can be used to some extent even if the screen gets shattered.

The camera features of both the devices include Gesture Shot, Gesture Interval Shot and Tap and Shot. The Gesture Shot helps users to click selfies using just hand gestures of closing the palm in a fist before the camera. As soon as the camera registers the gesture, it counts down to 3 and then clicks the selfie. The Gesture Interval Shot clicks four photos spaced 2 seconds apart and gets triggered by the same hand gesture being repeated twice. The Tap and Shot, once activated, helps the user to click photos instantly by tapping anywhere on the display.

K7 and K10 are 4G LTE devices capable of giving better network connectivity. They also are capable of VoLTE and VoWiFi for better voice communication over LTE or WiFi.

K7 and K10 might not sound too exciting in terms of specifications in days when many smaller brands are packing better and better specs at lower price range. But for those looking for affordable and durable smartphones with good brand value, K7 & K10 can be attractive options. K10 especially, with its better specs and Smart Quick Cover, is very appealing. And both these devices do come equipped with attractive features like Rear Key design, Gesture Shot, front flash and 4G LTE capability. And finally, they are MADE IN INDIA. That itself makes them special.
