K. Michelle addressed the meaning behind the single on Instagram:

The black woman is one of the most copied and sought after beings, but we are often told that our blackness is not enough or threatening to those who see strength as conflict or my opinions as difficult! My New song “Kim K”is a true testament to what it feels to live as a African American woman in this world and industry. My writing isnt based in convenience but in truth.
