Twenty two years after the disaster of Jurassic Park, we see that John Hammond’s dream came true and a theme park named Jurassic World is up and running with over 20,000 people on site. But when the scientists go an extra step and create a new dinosaur it’s only a matter of time before it goes terribly wrong.
The film begins with Zach and Gray leaving for the airport and their parents behind. We quickly see that they are heading to Jurassic World, to spend a week and meet up with their Auntie Claire who works (and has a pretty important job) at the park. That build up to seeing the park for the first time is pretty good as you really are excited to see what they come up with.
Another thing it builds tension for you to see is that new dinosaur that they have created. Got to be a little worrying when the scientists won’t even tell you how many different dinosaur DNA they actually used to create it. The name is rather amusing in all honesty which helped create a few jokes in the film, Indominus Rex.
The theme park has been open for years and they are constantly searching for the next star attraction to keep the guest numbers and interest high. The park combines rides and the dinosaur attractions in a very good way, combing a safari with normal rides you would see at different theme parks. The experience of Sea World was something I thought about at times. I think this helps people relate as a lot of people have now been to all different theme parks.
We see Owen becoming close to the velociraptors and managing to form a bond with them. Something that will be tested many times throughout the film, but a very interesting concept and wondering if something like that could work. Especially after what we have seen of them in the past.
Something I really loved about the film was how much at times it linked back to Jurassic Park and different things that we see from that. Yes I know simple things, but the excitement I had for seeing this film I actually felt like a kid again. We do get quite a few little things to make us smile, won’t spoil exactly what it is though you will have to go and watch it to find out.
Character development wasn’t fantastic in this film though, we didn’t really get a massive amount to work with and care about as the film went on. We just kinda knew the characters, but it didn’t take it to the next level. I also thought the whole thing about Claire and running in her heels was poor. Thinking back to Laura Dern as Ellie Sattler and how much she would get involved, I thought Claire as a character was a massive backwards step for female characters in this type of film. That might sound very picky but come on why needing to make a big deal about her shoes?
I think having some of the original themes in was essential to give it that really exciting feel and that is something I cannot complain about. The scenes with the dinosaurs are fantastic and we do see a lot more of the different species which was very pleasing. It’s crazy how exciting that side of a film like this can be, the final scene was pretty epic too. Also don’t worry they still feature some pretty crazy deaths as well! Really wish I could mention one in particular but would be such a big spoil, it was very brutal!
While the film does have its problem, it manages to do something a film like this should do, entertain you. Keeping you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what is going to happen next. Somethings might be predictable but some of the dinosaurs are not at all. What next for the Jurassic franchise?
