Now you may think July is the month you get to bask in sunshine whilst sitting glass in hand admiring your garden. I can not promise the sunshine but you should definitely take time to sit back and enjoy this month as many gardens will be at their peak. Having said that you know what is coming next…. yes all the jobs you can be getting on with.
- Deadheading and lots of it. Whether its bedding plants, perennials, roses if you remove faded flowers you will increase the chance of more flowers and stop the plant wasting energy on producing seeds that aren’t needed.
- Lift and divide congested clumps of iris.
- Towards the end of this month summer prune wisteria. Cut back this years long whippy shoots to about 5-6 leaves (around 20cm or so).
- Give shrubs and perennial plants a liquid feed.
- Feed roses with rose fertiliser.
- It is still a great time to take cuttings of lots of things – pyracantha, cotinus, potentilla, honeysuckle, spiraea, hydrangea, rosemary….. that’s probably enough to be going on with.
- Don’t forget to water during extreme dry spells especially anything that has been planted this year.
- Summer prune apple trees.
- Tie in the stems of dahlias to their supports.
- Keep up the weeding!
