Joe Manganiello Talks About Alcide on True to the End

Joe Manganiello’s Alcide Herveaux met his true death in the woods of Bon Temps during the final minutes of Fire in The Hole. The unexpected death shocked fans across the internet including me! In an interview on HBO’s True to the End website, Joe talked about Alcide’s death, his favorite moments from the show, souvenirs he’s taken from the set, and upcoming projects.

Joe knew early on that Alcide would most likely die even before meeting executive producer Brian Buckner for True Blood season 7. He explained to interviewer Diana Band that once Alcide got together with Sookie (Anna Paquin) there would not be many options for the end of the relationship. If Sookie leaves Alcide, Joe felt that it would put her in an unlikable position and that’s not what we should see in the final season. Plus considering the state of Bon Temps and the fact that Sookie refuses to leave with Alcide, their future together is uncertain anyway with the ever present danger.

Of his favorite moments during his five year run, Joe says he loved season 3 the best:

“Season 3. It was my first year, and I liked the idea of a biker outlaw pack of werewolves tearing through towns and that my character was the hero werewolf who stood up to them. I also enjoyed the mythology that was built into season 3, with Russell Edgington feeding the wolves vampire blood and having them under his control, and how Alcide, as the hero, worked to break that spell and free his own people. There’s a bit of Moses in that.”

One thing, he won’t miss is shooting outside in Malibu during the cold winter months. The actor says  that it was difficult to pretend his body ran hot when he was trying not to shiver. Interestingly enough, Joe took a lot of little things during his time on the show from various locations:

“I was the kleptomaniac on set, so I took stuff all the way through. “Oh I’m in Fangtasia today? I’ll be taking home some of these Fangtasia matchbooks.” When I was in Lupine’s werewolf bar — Lupine’s coasters? Awesome. There were vampire STD pamphlets in the hospital scene when Sookie was in a coma in season 3. Vampire sexually transmitted diseases? It was like, “Wow, these are so detailed. Kudos to the prop team — these are coming home with me.” So I have all this stuff from over the years. This year I took my sock [used for nude scenes] home because I want to put it in a frame.”

Joe was also asked what his “bad thing” was. Apparently the actor is a foodie and is a fan of both fine dining and regular food. One of his favorite places to eat is Roscoe’s for some fried chicken and waffles. And when asked whether he would frequent Merlotte’s or Fangtasia, he’d choose the vampire bar because it’s more exciting. Joe also maintains he would be a werewolf if he were a supernatural creature but wouldn’t turn down the chance to play a vampire if it came up. And of course, Joe has had a great time in five seasons:

“… I’ve had a really good time with the fans. I’m a passionate guy, and I get really excited about the work and pumping people up. It makes the job so much easier when people are that wild about things. I’ve traveled the world because of this show, and everywhere I go, there are different words for werewolf. I’m in France, on the Champs Elysees, and I hear, “Ah! Le loup-garou!” I’m in Barcelona at the Picasso museum and it’s “El hombre lobo! El hombre lobo!” Somebody once called me the Wolfman in Vietnamese, which for the life of me I couldn’t repeat. All around the world, I’m known as the Wolfman, the werewolf. It’s been a really fun ride.”

Rest in peace Alcide.
