“I will have made a choice the first week of August,” Joe Biden said at a press conference in his home town of Wilmington, Delaware.

“And I promise you, I'll tell you when I do,” he added.

“We will see”, replied the former vice-president of Barack Obama to a journalist who asked him if he could meet his candidate despite the COVID pandemic – 19.

The Democrat, 77 years old, joked that he would find it difficult to meet her discreetly, because of the journalists who keep watch outside his home in Wilmington, where he spends most of his time since the health crisis put an unprecedented halt to the US presidential campaign.

Winner of a Democratic primary marked by unprecedented diversity, the septuagenarian promised that he would choose a woman to accompany him in his campaign against Donald Trump, 74 years, and become the first vice president of the United States if she wins on November 3.

Her ex-rival in the primary and only black senator in Congress, Kamala Harris, tops the odds, along with former Barack Obama's national security adviser, Susan Rice.

With the historic protest movement against police violence and racism, the pressure has increased to choose an African-American running mate.

But strategists argue that he should instead opt for a woman from the Midwest, whose large rural and industrial regions had switched in favor of Donald Trump in 2016.

Other parliamentarians are included in the predictions, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, another unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination, as well as Val Demings and Karen Bass, two African-American elected officials of the House of Representatives.

Michigan governors Gretchen Whitmer and New Mexico governors Michelle Lujan Grisham are also cited.

While rumors are rife, the Politico news site updated an article on Tuesday on the various candidates by announcing that Joe Biden had chosen Kamala Harris “on 1 st August ”and affirming that he had called her“ remarkable running mate ”.

The specialized site has corrected by deploring “an error”. Politico spokesman Brad Dayspring told AFP that this was text used for formatting.

Joe Biden’s spokesperson TJ Ducklo tweeted, “That’s not true”.

Joe Biden will be officially nominated as a candidate by the Democratic Party at a convention organized on 11 at 19 August in Milwaukee, Wisconsin which will be mostly virtual .

By presenting himself as the “antithesis” of Donald Trump, the Democrat denounced the management by the Republican billionaire of the pandemic, which made nearly 150 00 0 deaths in the United States, as well as demonstrations against racism.

“He has shown that he cannot beat the pandemic and protect you. He cannot get the economy going and get America back to work. And it blows intentionally, unsurprisingly, on the flames of division and racism in this country, ”he said.
