Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake arrested two Indian nationals and a Sri Lankan on Sunday night who tried to smuggle a stock of jewellery, gold biscuits and foreign currency worth over Rs.190 million out of the country.
“8.5 kilogrammes of jewelry and bisected gold biscuits as well as US$75,000 and €18,000 in foreign currency, which were hidden in the luggage and the trouser pockets of the suspects,” a Customs official said.
The BIA Customs officers discovered that the two arrested Indian nationals, aged 53 and 42, are professionally engaged in smuggling gold and foreign currency through the airports of the two countries. Customs officials also state that the 46-year-old Sri Lankan who was arrested is a frequent flyer and engaged in business activities. Customs officials are further investigating the incident.
