Behind the Lens

I thought it might be fun to dissect a photoshoot, detailing some of the things that goes into making a beautiful image. This is a brief insight into one of my recent shoots. I thought it’d be cool if you got to see how each individual member of the team contributed their talents. For my part, lighting was simple. We were going for a clean, commercial feel with this particular shoot so I opted for soft lighting and simple, seamless background. The styling was very youthful, spring-orientated and fun. A perfect reflection of Jenisa’s personality.

For Jenisa’s shoot, I created a natural everyday look that can also be worn as a fun, bold spring look! I used all MAC products with the exception of Benefit’s BrowZing on the eyebrows and Ben Nye’s Banana powder for the highlight. *Tip Using a smoky brown on the inner and outer lid creates an illusion of a larger eyelid. The finishing touches includes a soft winged liner and babydoll lashes #138.

Jenisa had a lovely amount of naturally curly hair. Prior to the shoot she shampooed and let it air dry with leave-in conditioner (which personally makes a hair stylist’s job a whole lot easier). For the look in the shoot, we decided to go with big curly hair. To achieve this look, I merely enhanced her natural curl with the use of Zen Care Professional Firm Hold spray, a little Nairobi setting foam and then blow dried it. Since her curl pattern was so profound, a little product and some teasing was all that was needed. The results will speak for itself in the pictures. I hope the images from this shoot will aid in showing all of the natural hair community (as well as those considering joining the community) to embrace their curl whether big or small.

About our Model

My ultimate career goal is to be the face of Levis or Gap. I want to represent and be the spokesmodel for a major beauty product, clothing line. I hope to one day be on what you will call  your favorite commercial, your favorite movie and in your favorite magazine. There is no joy in selfishness. I want to use my success as a platform to help people around the world. I plan to focus on the youth and those who are poverty stricken. I will do more than donate money or my time, but implement programs and build youth centers. I want to leave a positive mark on every one I touch. I am completely and maybe too in love with Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet at the moment. I love their clothes. The styles are very youthful, but mature. And this is currently what I am doing with my own style. My personal style always depends on my mood. I love to mix match things though, matching is no fun ha. I love vintage pieces, flare pants, overalls paired with a blazer and a pair of dope heels. I am inspired by Beverly Johnson, and Iman. They were some of the first African American supermodels, embodying grace and beauty. Some of my favorite current models are: Arlenis Sosa, Liya Kebede, Cara Delevigne  and JOAN SMALLS. Joan Smalls has really motivated me this past year.
