Jeffrey Lewis – one of the world’s finest cult songwriters and storytellers – returns with the fuzz-fuelled ‘Sometimes Life Hits You”, the first song to be taken from the aptly titled new album ‘The EVEN MORE Freewheelin’ Jeffrey Lewis’.
The album was recorded by Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo) in just four days in Nashville and this sense of urgency runs through this bluesy slice of anti-folk rock, complete with bar-room piano tones. The song opens with talk of having ‘friends you can call’ and reading Shakespeare’s works before moving on to Jeffery’s classic witty yet hard-hitting observations: ‘You can outsmart all sadness and outfight with the best but sometimes life hits you like a chisel to the chest and you say ‘Ow, fuck, that hurt” and ‘You think that anyone who ever lived got through and enjoyed it?’
