We can talk for hours about how Jeffrey Lewis is one of the world’s finest storytellers, with his songs ranging from zipping tales about zombies and pigs to powerful self-referencing takedowns. See the handclap heartbreak of ‘Broken Broken Broken Heart’ or when he corrects himself on ‘Don’t Be Upset’.
When Jeffrey releases new material, it’s well worth a listen. His latest single is ‘Just Fun’, a song that will appear on forthcoming album ‘The EVEN MORE Freewheelin’ Jeffrey Lewis’ (out on 21 March via Blang Records).
A lo-fi acoustic and wordy 2 minutes and 19 seconds covering family, fantasies, frustrations and the foibles of life – from falling in and out of love to art, culture and aging – it’s packed with witty musings and relatable observations that start hopeful/ ‘Pick out someone friendly who romantically excites you. Start the hopeful dreaming of what if he or she likes you’ – before inevitably going downhill.
In his own inimitable way, Jeffrey is trying to make sense of what we’re all here for – ‘Know your only joy would be a life of creativity’ – before recalling the guilt, anxiety and occasional self-loathing that comes when ‘you’re wasting time with nonsense when you know you should be working’.
