J.Crew Hit With Backlash Over Featuring Black Model With 'Messy' Natural Hair

More drama in the fashion world!!
J.Crew came under fire recently after shoppers went off about a model photographed with “messy” hair (above) on their sister company Madewell’s site.
They accused the brand of failing to hire someone who could properly style Black hair! Meanwhile, others felt the natural look went with the aesthetic of the line!

Basically it was a mixed bag of reactions of people either criticizing or praising her edges! See some of them (below):

For the people complaining about the @madewell models hair,
Please! There’s nothing wrong with her hair! Let her wear her hair the way she wants. There goes the saying,
“Imperfectly Perfect.”

This ad is making my temple pulsate. @jcrew y’all gotta do better. Her hair should NOT look like this.

It’s such a shame that non-black girls can wear their hair any way they want and no one bats an eyelid; but a black girl has hair sticking out her ponytail and suddenly it’s the end of the world

Except, this is not the way to do a controlled messy look for black hair, in a professional shoot. This reeks of “I don’t know how to handle black hair”.

J.Crew has since apologized for the pic, writing on Twitter:

J.Crew strives to represent every race, gender, and background. We sincerely apologize for the styling of this model and the offense that was caused. We assure you that we are taking steps to address it, and to prevent this from happening again.
— J.Crew (@jcrew) November 10, 2017
They even removed it from the site!!
But the Dominican model featured, Marihenny Rivera Pasible, came out in support of the shoot and the hair, commenting on The Shade Room:

Model #MarihennyPasible stepped into The Shade Room to throw in her two cents about #JCrew’s super controversial ad! (View earlier post)A post shared by The Shade Room (@theshaderoom) on Nov 10, 2017 at 10:48pm PST

The ad really polarized Twitter!
But it brings up an interesting point, and we’re curious to see if other brands will be more sensitive in the future.
What are your thoughts though??
