What is Jaundice?
Jaundice is a condition in which there is a yellowing of the skin and sclera of eyes. It is not a disease itself, but it is a symptom of several underlying illnesses. This yellowish discoloration depends upon the levels of bilirubin- yellow-orange bile pigment. Moderate levels of bilirubin lead to a yellow color, while very high levels will appear brown. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment that is produced due to the breakdown of dead red blood cells in the liver. This disease may indicate a serious problem with the function of the red blood cells, liver, gallbladder, or pancreas.
