WHAT IS JARDIAMET?
Jardiamet is an oral medication, used to lower blood sugar levels in the individuals with type-2 diabetes mellitus. Your doctor may recommend this medicine when diet plus exercise do not provide you appropriate relief in blood sugar level control. It may be used either:
- alone as a single medicine, or
- in combination with some other anti-diabetic drugs such as Pioglitazone, Sulfonylurea, Insulin or Linagliptin.
This medicine contains two different active ingredients:
- Empagliflozin, a medicine belongs to a class of drugs called Sodium-Glucose Co-Transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors
- Metformin, a drug belongs to a group of medicines called Biguanides
Both of these ingredients work together to reduce blood sugar levels in the people with type-2 diabetes mellitus. It helps increase the amount of glucose expelled in the urine and lower the amount of sugar in the body. Controlled blood sugar helps prevent the risk of other ailments such as heart disease, kidney disease, blindness and foot amputation.
Here; it is recommended to follow a proper diet chart and do exercise regularly.
JARDIAMET SIDE EFFECTS:
Tell your doctor or health care provider as soon as possible if you don't feel well while taking this medicine. Jardiamet helps most of the individuals with type-2 diabetes mellitus, but it also may have some undesirable side-effects in a few people.
All medicines can have some side-effects. Sometimes they are serious, most of the time they are not. You may need medical attention if you get some of the side-effects. If you take this drug, you may be at a higher risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and genital infections.
Common Jardiamet side-effects may include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Passing more urine than normal
- Itching
- Genital burning, pain, redness or discharge which may be a sign of yeast infection
- Loss of taste
- Thirst
- Diarrhea or stomach ache
Serious side-effects are rare but they may require medical attention. Tell your doctor or health care provider as soon as possible if you notice any of the following symptoms:
- Fainting or loss of consciousness
- Light-headedness, dizziness
- Pain in the pelvis, or mid-back pain
- Burning sensation when passing urine
- Urine that appears cloudy
- Unusual thirst
- Straining or pain when passing urine
Tell your doctor immediately if you notice any symptoms of low blood sugar; including:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Sweating
- Numbness
- Feeling hungry
- Weakness
- Trembling
- Flushing or paleness
- A fast pounding heartbeat
Low blood sugar may occur in the people who already take another drugs to cure diabetes, such as a Sulfonylurea or insulin. Here; your doctor or health care provider may recommend to reduce the dose of Sulfonylurea or insulin while taking Jardiamet.
Tell your doctor once if you experience swelling on your penis that makes it difficult to pull back the skin around the tip.
Seek emergency medical help if you notice any of the following symptoms:
- Sudden onset of hives, itching or skin rash
- Swelling of the lips, face or tongue which may lead to difficulty swallowing or breathing
Tell your doctor immediately if you notice any of the symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis; including:
- Stomach pain
- Confusion
- Feeling sick or being sick
- Excessive thirst
- Rapid weight loss
- Unusual sleepiness or tiredness
- Fast and deep breathing
- A sweet smell to your breath, a sweet or metallic taste in your mouth
Stop taking Jardiamet tablet, if you develop any of the following symptoms of lactic acidosis such as:
- Muscle pain
- Drowsiness
- Feeling uncomfortable
- Abdominal pain
- Feeling weak and tired
- Lightheadedness
- Dizziness
- Unexplained weight loss
- Irregular heartbeat
- Rapid or difficult breathing
- Severe nausea or vomiting
JARDIAMET INTERACTIONS:
Tell your doctor or health care provider, if you are taking any other medications. Some medicines may interfere with Jardiamet. They may include:
- Blood thinners (anticoagulants) such as Warfarin
- Diuretics or medications to increase urine production
- High blood pressure medications such as ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin II receptor antagonists, beta blockers
- Antibiotic medicines used to treat certain infections such as Rifampicin
- Asthma medicines such as Salbutamol, Terbutaline
- HIV medicines
- Cancer medications such as Crizotinib, Olaparib, Vandetanib
- Medicines used to treat reflux and ulcers such as Cimetidine
- Drugs to treat diseases that involve inflammation including asthma and arthritis
- Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Diclofenac, Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Naproxen, Meloxicam and selective COX II inhibitors (Parecoxib, Celecoxib, Etoricoxib)
- Iodinated contrast agents
- Medicines to treat mental disorders such as Chlorpromazine
- Medicines to treat chronic hepatitis C infections such as Dolutegravir, Daclatasvir
- Medicines used to treat endometriosis such as Danazol
- Medicines used to treat seizures, chronic pain or glaucoma such as Topiramate, Acetazolamide, Zonisamide, Dichlorphenamide
PRECAUTIONS:
Before taking Jardiamet, tell your doctor or health care provider if you are allergic to it or if you have a history of any other allergies. Do not take this medicine, if you have an allergy to any drug containing Empagliflozin or Metformin.
Some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction may include:
- Rash, itching or hives on the skin
- Wheezing or difficulty breathing
- Shortness of breath
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body
Before taking Jardiamet, tell your doctor or health care provider about your medical history, especially of:
- Any type of metabolic acidosis such as diabetic ketoacidosis, lactic acidosis
- Diabetic pre-coma
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Severe infection
- If you have a history of heart attack or heart failure
- Breathing problems
- Have blood clots in the lungs
- Significant blood loss
- have inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
- Excessive use of alcohol
It is not recommended to take this medicine during pregnancy. It may affect the health of developing baby. Tell your doctor if you're are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Do not take Jardiamet medication, if you are breast-feeding. It may pass into breast milk. However, it is not known whether Empagliflozin (an active ingredient) passes into breast milk. Ask your doctor before breast-feeding.
Do not give this medication to children under the age of 18 years. It may cause unwanted side-effects.
