In the midst of last night’s action packed True Blood season 6 premiere, another character died last night. Janina Gavankar’s Luna succumbed to the effects of skinwalking one too many times, with the last being to shift into Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian) to save her daughter Emma (Chloe Noelle). Janina recently talked with TV Guide’s Natalie Abrams about the death, how no one truly dies in the land of True Blood, and what’s next for her.
Gavankar says that she is truly grateful for the time she had on True Blood because she never imagined she’d stick around for two seasons. Her initial thought was that the character would be gone after season 4:
“I really thought I was going to die in the beginning. I was like, ‘I’m going to die in Episode 12 of Season 4 and I’m going to go out with a bang and I’ll have been so happy to have been there.I was so thankful that they would even want me around for two years. It’s been an awesome experience.”
The experience lasted into season 6, Janina revealed, because the death scene she had shot initially had been taken out in the season 5 season finale so she had to actually come back and re-shoot it:
“We shot one at the end of Season 5 where I died, but it didn’t work or something [and] they cut it out. So, I had to come back and re-die this season.”
But as we all know, no one truly dies in True Blood land. Allan Hyde (Godric) has reappeared a couple of times since his death in season 2. So to Janina there’s always a chance to come back:
“No one really dies in True Blood land. There’s always a chance, but even if it doesn’t happen, it’s been a dream. I took risks with this show that I’ve never taken on any other one. When you’re a woman in this business, you’re asked to do a lot of things. You have to decide if and when you’re ever going to do it, and I’m so proud to have been able to take the risks I have with this group of people around me. It’s been a blessing.”
In addition to True Blood, Gavankar recently appeared on the CW’s Arrow and her character didn’t die so that means she could always return. Not to mention she also has a role on the League and recently signed on to lend her voice to a game. Janina is a gamer so to her it’s one of the best things ever, even if she won’t say which game she’s voicing:
”I’m a huge gamer, so this is the most exciting thing that’s happened. I’ll tell you this, I played No. 3 in the series recently.”
Congratulations to Janina for a great run on True Blood. Hopefully we’ll see her again soon in a flashback!
