About James Patterson
James Brendan is an American author and philanthropist. Among his works are the Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, Women's Murder Club, Maximum Ride, Daniel X, NYPD Red, Witch and Wizard, and Private series, as well as many stand-alone thrillers, non-fiction, and romance novels. His books have sold more than 300 million copies and he was the first person to sell 1 million e-books.
Early life and works
Born as James Brendan Patterson on March 22, 1947, his mother was a homemaker and teacher while his father was an insurance broker. He graduated summa cum laude with both a B.A. in English from Manhattan College and an M.A. in English from Vanderbilt University.
He dropped his PhD candidature at Vanderbilt to acquire a job in advertising and was an advertising executive at J. Walter Thompson. He started to devote his time to writing after he retired from advertising in 1996. He stated Evan S. Connell's 1959 debut novel Mrs. Bridge as his greatest influence and inspiration towards taking up writing as a full-time career and later published his first novel called The Thomas Berryman Number in 1976.

Patterson has written 147 novels since professionally taking up writing as a career in 1976. His most popular and the top-selling U.S. detective series in the past ten years include novels featuring his character Alex Cross, a forensic psychologist formerly of the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation, who now works as a private psychologist and government consultant.
