But the couple met for a special Friday edition of their "Red Table Talk" show on Facebook to share their side of the controversy surrounding their relationship with singer August Alsina.
According to the couple of superstars, "they were going through a very difficult time" and had broken up when Pinkett Smith started a romantic relationship with the singer of 27 years.
During their "Red Table Talk" conversation, Smith urged his wife to be clear about his relationship with Alsina.
"I got into a tangle with August," said Pinkett Smith.
In a recent interview with radio host Angela Yee, Alsina said he had been involved in a romantic relationship with Pinkett Smith, who has been married to Smith since 1997.
"In fact, I sat down with Will and had a conversation," said Alsina during the interview. "Because of the transformation of their marriage into (a) life partnership which they have talked about several times, and not involving romanticism, it has given me its blessing."
Alsina said he had lost money and relationships due to rumors that he had been involved with 48-year-old Pinkett Smith.
The actress and her 51-year-old husband have long been the subject of rumors that they have an open marriage.
The couple denied this, but said their marriage is not traditional and that they have a "life partnership".
Friday's episode said the couple felt compelled to speak out because there was so much speculation after the interview with Alsina.
"We didn't specifically say anything," said Will Smith. "Coming to the table was like we just felt like it got to the point where you have to say something."
Pinkett Smith said that she started a friendship with Alsina about four and a half years ago and that it became more so after she and her husband had a bad time.
She also said that she wanted to clear up Alsina after stating that her husband had authorized the affair, although she added that she understood why the young singer might have believed it to be the case.
"The only person who can give this authorization in this particular circumstance is myself," she said. "I could really see how he would perceive this as permission because we were amicably separated and I think he also wanted to make it clear that he is not a house destroyer either. What he does 'is not."
The actress said she suffered "a lot" and "broke" during the relationship.
She and Will tried "everything we could to get away from each other only to realize that it was not possible."
Pinkett Smith said that her relationship with Alsina had ended, that the Smiths had reconciled and that she had said that she had not spoken to the singer in years.
She said that she and her husband had now arrived in a place of "unconditional love".
Smith said he wasn't sure he could talk to Pinkett Smith again when they had problems, but reminded him of their commitment.
"I told you the first year that we got married, that I could love you through anything," said Will Smith.
The couple knocked their fists while jokingly reciting their interpretation of the motto of their film "Bad Boys": "We ride together, we die together. Bad marriage for life."
