BARBIERI ON SHOW: An exhibition on the work of renowned photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri is opening in Milan on November 29.

It is being held at the 29 Arts in Progress gallery and running during March 25, 2023, the “Gian Paolo Barbieri: Unconventional” show will feature a unique collection of never-before-seen color illustrations and photographs by Barbieri.

The exhibit will feature images of top models and celebrities in key advertising campaigns that Barbieri has photographed over the years for brands like Versace, Vivienne Westwood, Valentino, Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Gianfranco Ferre, and others. The aim is to have a glimpse of the lesser-known work of this photographer, and to show the connection to the worlds of art and cinema in his iconography.

For example, for a Dolce Vita-inspired shoot for the Io Donna magazine in Rome in 1997, Barbieri portrayed model Eva Herzigova in a Krizia dress under the photographs of Alfred Hitchcock—one of his favorite directors—and Italian film icon Gina Lollobrigida.

On a personal note, this exhibition closely follows the release of a documentary film on Barbieri’s life and work, that will be shown in Italian cinemas the following month. Dubbed “L’uomo e la bellezza”, or “The man and the Beauty” in English, the 75-minute film directed by Emiliano Scatarzi features interviews with Dolce & Gabbana, Monica Bellucci, Rita Airaghi for Fondazione Ferrè and Giuseppe Zanotti, and others.

The documentary premiered at the Biografilm 2022 Festival in Bologna in June, when it won the Audience Award in the Arts and Music category. After the Italian rollout, it will release internationally on Sky Arts from January 23rd.

Born in Milan in 1935, Barbieri is one of the most influential fashion photographers. He comes from a textile wholesaler family, and it was in his father’s warehouse that Barbieri begun to get familiar with fashion.

After moving to Rome, Barbieri accepted a job offer in Paris, starting a career in fashion photography as assistant to Tom Koblin of Harper’s Bazaar for a short period. In 1964, he went back to Milan, and opened his first photography studio, where he began working for outlets like Novità, the magazine which became Vogue Italia in 1966. From that time on, his cooperation with Condé Nast was born, and over the years it has expanded to international publications involving American Vogue, Vogue Paris, and Vogue Germany, plus Vanity Fair and GQ via the years. — Sandra Salibian.

J. CREW RUNNING: Only in time for fall marathon season, J. Crew is teaming up running brand Tracksmith on a capsule collection which release on Tuesday.

The collection of running shorts, singlets, track pants, long-sleeve T-shirts, turtlenecks and hoodies involve some signature Tracksmith styles like the singlets and shorts, and more lifestyle options.

The collection was created by Taylor and Babenzien and a small group to “set the direction,” Taylor stated, and direct the distinct designs and embellishments like a “J” with a wing coming out of it for the front of the hoodie and the block letters “Crew” on the back. Tracksmith’s trademark logo of Eliot the hare appears on many items, and the singlets have the brand’s sash on the chest. Prices differ from $65 for singlets and shorts to $110 for a Trackhouse hoodie, $128 for Fells merino wool turtleneck, and $198 for a Bislett pants.

“A key thing about the collection is that the anchor pieces are Brendon’s Tracksmith’s favorite pieces, and they happen to be mine too — the Bislett Pants and Fells Turtleneck,” Taylor stated. “They’re really standout in terms of running apparel aesthetics, but they act really well, for this reason, Brendon was drawn to them”.

On September 30, Tracksmith opened its second store in London through the London Marathon weekend. It was open until October 7, when it closed for renovations, before a permanent reopening in November.

To open the store, Tracksmith introduced its initial running shoe, the Eliot Runner, that Taylor said has been in development for five years. The shoes are available for pre-order on October 24th and will ship in November.

COLE’S CAUSE: Kenneth Cole is announcing the brand’s second NFT drop on Tuesday night. The drop, named “The All Together” collection, is centered around the Mental Health Coalition’s logo, the square peg in a circle.

Among the artworks which will be announced, from rarest to most common, are: “We are all f-Ked up,” “We are all square pegs in round holes”, and “We all have issues.” Each will cost 0.08 ETH, or $1,307.58.

“One in four people are directly affected by a mental illness, and four out of four people are affected by it,” says Kenneth Cole, “mental illness is definitely the worst public health crisis of all time.” Via our brand and partner platforms, we aim to have a meaningful, predictable and measurable impact on this crisis, but we cannot do it alone. We are thrilled to continue to engage with the Web3 community, hoping that by a combination of passion, program, implementation and access, we will continue to open people’s minds, expand their horizons and, thus, save lives.”

Similar to Cole’s initial series of NFTs, that dropped last May, 100% of the money generated will be donated to The Mental Health Coalition led by Cole. The Mental Health Coalition is working to end the stigma surrounding mental health and change the way people discuss, and care for, mental illness.

At the Clinton Global Initiative last month, the Mental Health Coalition, in collaboration with Meta, revealed that its content and resources have changed how over 500,000 Americans feel about the importance of mental health and their willingness to seek it out. Mental health advocacy in particular changed people’s views on stigma measurably, enabling the process and resulting impact to be scalable.

The digital initiative showed a major increase in people’s understanding of their emotional well-being and the importance of taking care of it. It increased people’s willingness to seek critical resources for emotional well-being as well.

Cole will participate in a Twitter Spaces conversation on Tuesday evening in the Web 3 space. After the conversation, the NFT collection will be available to mint.
