Following shows with Michael Cera Palin and Awakebustillinbed and ahead of a main stage appearance at 2024’s ArcTanGent Festival, itoldyouiwouldeatyou have shared new single ‘Moscow is Silent’ – their first new material since 2019.
Written in early 2021, the song is all too prescient with its subject of feeling helpless in an endlessly cruel and hate-filled world… But there’s also a defiance and pep talk to try and rise above this. As vocalist Joey Ashworth says, it’s ‘about telling the self-pitying heroin-chic nihilist in all of us to grow the fuck up.’
Opening with a potent burst of Maeve Westall’s drumbeats and a relentless bass line, the chiming guitars come in as Joey sings about being shipped off to war, bombs being dropped and how ‘I’ll hate myself awake’. There’s a post-hardcore feel throughout while the church music-esque breakdown – ‘Come love me in all my ignorance’ – is a welcome surprise that heads the song into its thrilling final throes that fall somewhere between Tellison and Touche Amore.
