Masters of friendship and sadness itoldyouiwouldeatyou have unveiled the first song from their next EP, due to be released by our friends over at Rose Coloured Records in the near future. Twinklier than previous releases, ‘All Unwritten Classics’ retains the melodic emo stylings of Moose Blood but with the sense of humor and pop-punk ethics of Modern Baseball.
Joey Ashworth sings about how he rejects blame and living up to horrible clichés in the song that clocks in around the two-and-a-half minute mark. There is an instrumental breakdown halfway through that brings to mind Joey and guitarist Josh See’s ‘old’ band Our Lost Infantry (and how odd is it to see those words written down…) before the repeated mantra of ‘All unwritten classics start with you’ are belted out with increased desire. The song ends with a clattering smash of instruments that hints ityiwey will be bringing more noisy elements into their sound. We can’t wait.
B-side ‘Attention’ is enthralled with early 00s emo and also brought to our minds the carefully constructed songs of Evan Weiss (Into It. Over It.) in his various guises. The subtly optimistic words ‘There’s nothing left for me to do. A phone call away but I came through’ ring through the song, while the dual guitars pummel along like a band who have grown up on a diet of Topshelf Records. There’s also a magnetic appeal in the call-and-response delivery of the lead and backing vocals as the song heads towards its understated finish.
itoldyouiwouldeatyou are a band increasing in maturity and evolving all the time, it’s going to be a great journey seeing where they stop off next.
