Sebastian Vettel failed to come out of the first qualifying round and was only able to clinch a modest 17th place, while his teammate Charles Leclerc reached the second qualifying round but was only able to place 13th out of the grid before Sunday's race.
Ferrari knew they would have a hard time picking up speed heading into this weekend's Italian Grand Prix, but even they couldn't have predicted that things would be so bad.
Leclerc sits fifth in the Drivers' Championship with 45 points, already 112 points behind runaway leader Lewis Hamilton. Things are even worse for four-time world champion Vettel, who has just 16 points and sits in 13th place.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari is in 5th place and 203 points behind the leader Mercedes.
A small bright spot for Ferrari is that its staunch supporters - known as 'tifosi' - were not present to witness the disastrous performance, with the races still taking place behind closed doors.
"At the end of the day, we kind of expected it to be the weekend," visibly frustrated Leclerc told Sky Sports. "We knew Spa [last weekend] and here are the two worst leads for us. It's like that ... it's hard.
"Right now it's like that and I need to get the most out of the car. It hurts even more that it's at home. It's the reality for us right now. We have to. work, "Leclerc said.
At the top of the standings, Mercedes recorded another brace as Lewis Hamilton clinched his 8th pole at the Italian Grand Prix, with his teammate Valtteri Bottas just losing a tenth of a second to start second on the grid.
"It was a fantastic performance for the team," Hamilton told Sky Sports. "It wasn't the easiest, you saw how close it was between us. It took a clean ride and I got both.
"Valtteri was strong and kept pushing, I was a little nervous through the final sector. In the years that I'm here I've had times where we had less downforce and grip, [but] speed through the Lesmos [corner] was great. He's trying to find the right balance, which is not that easy, "said Hamilton.
McLaren's Carlos Sainz arguably put in the performance of the day to clinch 3rd place for his best grid place in history, while Racing Point driver Sergio Perez's 4th place matched his best qualifying position .
