Not stopping for a single second, we left that 'public house' behind us because London's Dominion Theatre had one final feature for the day! Yes, I wanted to see at least one 'West End' show whilst I was in London, it was an actual must! Overflowing with talent, 'Sister Act' was the only sane choice for us to make! 'Oh! Deloris! What's Occurring!?' Dominion, she better don't!
Those streets were reigning chaos, quite like they had for 'Deloris Van Cartier' in that well known film classic! London's 'Tottenham Court Road' resembled the chase 'Whoopi' executed as she ran for cover, missing those devilish gangsters! Yes, we're going to be having lots of film references in this blog publication! Alrigh? Tidy! Oh, a certain 'Welsh' icon had been booked to fill one of the biggest roles of the show! I'm going to continue with those hints! Cracking! Why did it only take me and my mom a few seconds to find our seats in the stalls whilst others acted the fool! Oh, listen! Let me break it down because I was missing some order! Even the ushers were throwing eyes at those perplexed theatregoers because they had no idea where they were heading! Take your seats otherwise I'll break your face! Not my words, I did imagine one of the leading ladies saying that in a 'famous' role from another one of hers! On with the show! I was practically falling asleep as the day had started back in the West Midlands before the birds! Oh!
Those theater prices for sweets didn't impress us, I personally saw no reason to buy anything. In fact both of us decided against an interval drink because the day had been long and my flight the following day would be even longer! The curtain did eventually go up, it was a relief for the show to finally begin, I wasn't being impatient I was just exhausted. Now, really? When had they started to allow glass bottles of wine and glasses to be brought to customers seats? I really needed to speak to those who allowed that because the clinking was too much, there's a time and place for that, they needed plastic everything! You'd think I not been to the theater for years? Well, it had been 2023 when I had gone to the theater last in London and I remembered a civilised ambience twice before 'Sister Act'. It took from the prestige of going to the theatre, I didn't want to hear those sweetie bags rustling in-between numbers, not a mood! London needed to fix up, those theater rules had lost their sharpness, I needed order! On with the show!
Opening to 'Take Me To Heaven', 'Alexandra Burke' wowed the audience with her showstopping vocals and musicality! Setting the scene for her witnessing the shooting that forced her to find the convent, Deloris ran fast! 'Lemar' acted as 'Curtis Jackson', Deloris's gangster boyfriend, After going on the run, Deloris finds 'Eddie Souther', a police officer who took Deloris to the convent! 'Mother Superior' wasn't impressed with her newest nun, little did she know that she would be 'Fabulous, Baby!' 'Mother Superior' was played by who? That leading nun role was played by the legendary 'Ruth Jones' better know for her iconic work as 'Nessa' in 'Gavin & Stacey!' This upbeat show was keeping me on the edge of my seat, it was a pleasure to bop along to those nonstop West End musical bops! Now, I have left one of the headliners out for a reason because what do 'Birds of a Feather' have in common with nuns? They flock together! Yes, 'Lesley Joseph' impressed me with her portrayal of 'Sister Mary Patrick!' Go on, 'Lesley Joseph!
Now, it wasn't all about those well known headliners because the ensemble were killing it! Played by 'Lizzie Bea', I really thought she brought a whole new energy to 'Sister Mary Robert', working famously alongside 'Alexandra Burke' as the newest nun in the convent! Of course, it was on our minds whether 'Ruth Jones' would slip into a little bit of 'Nessa' as she had just announced that her stint in the convent would finish up soon, her presence was needed down in Barry on those slots! Sure, we did get an almighty 'Oh' from 'Ruth Jones', it was what the whole theater had been waiting for! Filled with high energy musical numbers, the show told the story as the first film had done with 'Whoopi Goldberg' starring in it. The priest served up some serious 'camp' and being a West End show, I was there for every single second of that jazz! Those choir performances were featured, yes they were! 'I Could Be That Guy' saw an unlikely love story blossom. Yes, I was extremely tired by that point, the show was great but I needed my bed!
London had served up another stellar musical for me in the West End, I was ready to sleep for a week after the curtain was lowered at the end of the show. I want to talk about how it was so good to see show linked to a classic film, a show that was simply staged but with big names and a simple story. Yes, certain parts did stray away from the original film, that didn't really matter because those key aspects had been captured. New songs had been introduced to add some musicality, specifically 'Raise Your Voice' added body to those choir rehearsals. I had really wanted to see 'Bev Knight' as 'Deloris' but that wasn't so, I was more than impressed with 'Alexandra Burke's' vocals and acting prowess! Bringing that iconic cathedral performance from the classic first film 'Sister Act', the West End brought back 'Take Me To Heaven' but made it the 'Reprise!' 'Blistering with sisterhood! London didn't need to 'pray' because that 'divine' midway reprise made everything alright! Those lyrics were racy and London as there for it! I was awake!
'Sister Mary Robert' had never asked questions neither worn clothes that made people stare, 'The Life I Never Led' took the show to a different place. This supreme vocal by 'Lizzie Bea' captured those questioning scenes that 'Sister Mary Robert' experienced during the original movie as 'Whoopi' led her as 'Sister Mary Clarence'. 'Lemar!' Where had he got to?! With the final number fast approaching, it was pure karma to see 'Curtis Jackson' get what he deserved! What we didn't see in the film was 'Mary Clarence' get the man, it was to be 'Eddie Souther' made his feelings clear. 'Deloris' found her own show, bringing back 'Fabulous, Baby' as 'Alexandra' took her vocals to a new height, she's more than fabulous! Now, with a bit of and new, something for the show and new faces, it was something quite different to see when the original film remains forever iconic! I need to find a musical to see in China, I need to never not stay away from the theatre! 'Sister Act' at the 'Dominion Theatre' in London, it was amazing!
