It’s Official – Dad Rules the Remote

Dads are officially in charge of the remote control, research has revealed. A study showed dads are both the first to hit the sofa in the evening and are the one who gets to decide what shows will form the night’s viewing.

Researchers found dads rule the remote in as many as seven out ten British homes.

But the stats also found mums grab the most comfortable chair in the living room.

The report also found eight out of ten families will have a TV related argument during the Christmas holiday period, with Birmingham families most likely to bicker.

Tristia Harrison of Talk Talk, which commissioned the study, said:

”TV has long been the source of many a debate from what programme to watch to who is in control of the remote.

”The holiday season is a time for families to get together and it’s inevitable that with so much great content there will be a few clashes.

”The good news is that 40% of those questioned said catch-up TV has improved their TV viewing experience, sparing a row with those closest to them.”

Women more likely to start a row, with men less confrontational, and the 25 to 34 year old age group is the most quarrelsome.

Over 55s are least likely to voice their opinion.

Whilst most arguments are likely to start over what to watch on TV, the survey of 3,000 Brits found that 47% of us will quarrel over the best place to sit in front of the telly.

One in four admitted the television volume is the main gripe, with teenagers listening at full volume, and grandparents happy to watch on mute.

The research was conducted to mark the launch of TalkTalk’s Essentials TV package, which includes TV, totally unlimited broadband, and evening and weekend calls for £7.50 a month, plus line rental.
