As this is posted we are about an hour away from the bells and the nation's ears are turned toward the most famous clock of them all.
Down through the past 4,000-or-so posts on this blog, Big Ben has taken center stage on a number of occasions. And, in the spirit of one final glance over the shoulder as we move into the New Year, here are a couple of our favorite Big Ben Posts, beginning with David Tucker from 2014…
Look at the very top of the tower. It sort of resembles a slate gray ski ramp. Just beneath it you can see five elliptically shaped, gilded openings. Behind those elliptically shaped openings – in the room, the space behind them – there’s a very powerful white lamp called the Ayrton Lamp. When parliament’s sitting at night it’s lit. That’s how you tell. Look for that great white lamp beaming out from inside there…

At six o’clock on BBC Radio 4 the chimes of Big Ben herald the news. To me, it is a familiar and kindly old friend preparing me gently for the tales of war and fiscal calamity to come.
If I’m not in the room when the bell chimes, my daughter calls for me so that I don’t miss it. Often I’ll switch the wireless off after the bells, not wishing the news to besmirch the warm feeling engendered by my two favorite sounds: my daughter’s voice and London’s most famous bell.
Just this very evening, as I typed this piece at the computer, my wife turned up the volume on the kitchen radio so I could hear it at the other end of the house. It was a lovely New Year gift: exactly what I wanted. Full Post HERE: Daily Constitutional Big Ben 2
