Your puppy can eat puppy food until he’s about 52 weeks old, but after that period he needs to start eating adult dog food.  Adult food for canines is filled more solidly with nutrients and supplements than puppy food, fairly since an adult dog eats fewer calories than a puppy. Thee vitamins and minerals in adult food also vary than they’re in puppy food.

It’s recommended to gradually introduce adult dog food to your pup so that by the 52nd week he can be wholly converted over. Otherwise, there he’ll suffer from some health consequences such as his metabolism slowing down. The non-fuss method of transitioning from puppy food to adult dog food is to substitute 1/4 cup of adult food for puppy food. Then slowly add 1/4 more food replacement every other day. However, if you discern any stomach distress, cut back on the adult dog food immediately and do the replacement even more gradually.

Adult Dog Food

There are several factors that impinge on what and how much of a food a young dog should eat. Factors like the pup’s size, breed, health and even sex. However, a general rule of thumb is that if with the food introduction you notice weight gain, you may have to try a different food or give a varied amount. Lastly, make sure to commend your pup when he eats his new food to show positive reinforcement.
