The Ruminaters formed in mid 2011. Since then they have made a reputation for their dark, spooky but still fun as all hell sound. As well as their rowdy live sets. The band have just released their debut album I hate the Ruminaters. Tomatrax caught up with Teddy from the band to ask a few questions.
How did the band form?
We all met in High School. We all played together in music class a bit but not really as a band. It wasn’t until we left school that we invited Pencil to come round and make some noise with us.
Where did the name the Ruminaters come from?
We Ruminated on it.
What’s it like to have your first full length album out?
So bloody great.
We worked really hard on this and we are so stoked with how it sounds and what we came up with. I feel like our music has come along way throughout the process of recording too.
Was it hard to pick what went on the record?
No it all happened quite naturally. We have a lot of songs and we were spoiled for choice but i guess being on the farm gave us the opportunity to just see which tracks had a vibe.
What made you decide to call it “I hate the Ruminaters”?
We hate em, don’t you?
You received a lot of critical acclaim for your first few singles, did this make you feel an pressure when putting your album together?
Not really. We love to hear good news about people liking our music. If anything it probably gave us some confidence that we were doing something cool i guess.
We just write music that we like.
What was the inspiration behind the video for “I lost my grandpa’s teeth”?
Haha The two jakes were over seas so I decided to dress Jarleth up as a Grandpa and follow him round and make fuss..
He did a pretty dang good job.
You’ve just returned from a tour round the USA, how did that go?
USA is cool. I think we will definitely head back and do more shows there for sure.
Your releases have had a series of cartoon covers, what is the inspiration behind these?
These guys are Ruminaters!
They are wacky characters that come out of Pencil’s Brain.
Each cover tells the story to each song.
Do you ever listen to your own music?
Only during the recording process.. Once it is released it is no longer ours..
What music do you listen to?
John, Paul, George and Ringo. The Strokes. Talking Heads. The Kinks.
Now that the album is out what do you plan on doing next?
We have been on the road since releasing the album. So more of that and then hopefully head back to the states before dropping another album!
