KINGS are riding high at the moment - album on the way, talked about by Alternative Press, added to the Homegrown & Heavy playlist on Spotify - and now the second cut from their forthcoming album is here. Tomatrax caught up with guitarist Nat Cochran to ask a few questions.
How did the band form?
We started writing some demos for fun in late 2014 and then had a thought of making it something serious. We didn't have a vocalist so we linked up with Lewis who we knew through previous bands we were in and we collectively started writing the music that would later be on our debut album.
Where did the name "Kings" come from?
Kings comes from a belief in that everyone is equal, we are all kings and queens. People may think they're higher or lower than others but really we're all the same, just humans trying to get through to the best that we can. Because everyone has great potential, we can all be regarded as kings and queens in the making.
You have a new album about to be released, how does it feel to have it finished and ready to go?
It feels amazing! We've been sitting on the tracks for a while and we're very proud of what we've produced so we can't wait to show everyone a full body of work in an album.
How will the latest album compare with your previous releases?
The album is quite similar to our singles that we have released, however there are some songs that will surprise fans. We tried to make our album as dynamic as possible so look out for the surprise tracks.
What made you pick 'Never Alone' as the title track?
'Never Alone' is a song that will stand out on the album, it is quite different to our other songs. It is one that can easily be used for introspection and is quite peaceful. Hopefully fans will listen and have a moment of peace among the other songs on the album.
You've said how the single 'What flag are you flying' is about fighting for your beliefs, has this been a challenge the band have been faced with?
Definitely. A challenge, but a welcome challenge. Some of our beliefs about love for all, and hope in your fellow human can sometimes be beliefs not everyone shares and so people can be confrontational about it. However we never hide or are ashamed of our beliefs, we truly live it out no matter the opposition.
When writing what comes first, the words or the music?
We generally write music and lyrics separately, and then bring them together depending on the feel of the music and message of the lyrics.
Do you ever listen to your own music?
Of course! We write music that we enjoy listening so we'll occasionally listen to our own songs haha.
What other music do you listen to?
We definitely listen to a number of heavy bands, but we all have a pretty eclectic collection. We all listen to a lot of different stuff like rap, indie rock, pop and rock. We enjoy all types of music really!
What do you have planned once the album is out?
We will be touring around Australia showing as many people as we can our new material and we have also started writing our next release.
