Melbourne punk rockers Magic Bones have just put out their latest single 'Hotter than the sun' taken from their forthcoming album. Tomatrax caught up with Kiri, the band's lead singer, to ask a few questions.
Your debut album is set for release soon, how will it compare with your previous work? Our singles to date have all been full throttle garage punk numbers, minimal room to breathe. The album is still pretty high tension, but I'd say there are more extended moments of release.
When will the album be released? We don't have an exact date for you yet! Aiming for August/September. We're up to the mastering and artwork stage.
Do you know what the album will be titled?Hotel Separation. Outside the band, you're the first to know that.
You funded the album via Pozible campaign, what made you take this approach to funding the album? We funded the 'Hotter Than The Sun' 7 inch single release through Pozible. It was our managers idea to touch base with our fans and invite them to get involved. We've never crowd funded before. With so much of our own money already going into the record, it's definitely going to help get the whole album campaign off to a good start. I don't think we'd feel great about asking for money without giving our supporters something in return, so we put together some cool little merch packages to choose from.
What made you pick 'Hotter Than The Sun' as your latest single? It's got a similar vibe to our previous single releases. It's our first release since 'Danger I Am' (2015), so we wanted to jump back in with a song that is clearly recognisable as Magic Bones. We also knew we could have a lot of fun with the video for this song... We've really played up the space theme.
You said the single will be accompanied by a mysterious cover version, can you shed some light on this cover?Yeah, we play it at our live shows!
You've been touring around Australia, how has that been going? It's so good to get back out there, play some of our own headline shows and meet some new bands too. We just did four dates down the East Coast and have been previewing a lot of the album. There's been really good energy on stage and from the audiances at every show so it's feeling great. We're playing our hometown shows in Melbourne and Adelaide this weekend so that will be different again.
When writing what comes first, the words or the music?Usually the music, then the words. The music can, and quite often does change dramatically because of a hook that comes from the words though. Chicken or the egg?
Where did the name Magic Bones come from?Circa 1950's & 60's, hipsters in Soviet Russia illegally pressed rock'n'roll music on old x-rays. They called it Bone Music. Someone once told us these pressings were also known as Magic Bones.
Do you ever listen to your own music?Yep. When we're writing, recording and mixing, we're listening to it a lot. Once it's out in the world we're listening to other artists much more than our own tunes.
What other music do you listen to?Whatever pricks our ears up! There's so much amazing music coming out of our little pockets of the world (Melbourne & Adelaide) alone.
What do you have planned after the album is released?Tour the album as far and wide as possible.
