Brisbane’s indie rockers Custard are back touring about and will be joining the star studded line up at Between the Bays at the end of the month. Tomatrax caught up with frontman Dave McCormack to ask a few questions.
You’ll be playing at Between the bays festival, how did you get involved?
We played the festival a few years ago, I think it was 2011. Paul Thompson from BTB just called up and explained the vibe of the festival and we jumped at the chance. I love it.
What can we expect from your show?
We are going to play lots of old songs and might sneak in a newie or two.
Given you have quite a big back catalog is it hard to pick what songs you’ll play?
We tend to play the songs that were released as singles plus a few of our favorite album tracks. It’s pretty much a “best of” set.
Are there any bands you’ll be looking forward to seeing at the festival?
It’s a stellar line up so I imagine we will be grooving along to everyone.
What inspired Custard to get back together?
We did a reunion show in 2009 to celebrate Queensland’s 150th birthday and since then have played a show every two years or so.
Are there any plans to put out any more Custard material?
We often talk about doing new stuff and in fact we have been in Glenn’s studio bashing out a few tunes. Who knows what will come of it.
You’ve also done a fair bit of solo releases, how does performing solo compare with being in a band?
It’s all basically about scoping out the best vibe at the time. I can groove solo or I can shake it with a band. I like to follow my mystic compass.
You’ve been responsible for a number of TV and film scores, how does this compare with making “rock” music?
Rock music with the band is about “verse/chorus/verse/chorus” whereas doing film music is a lot more repetitive and more sparse. It’s sort of like chalk and cheese.
What other music projects have you been up to?
Nothing much to speak of really. Laying low.
Do you ever listen to your own music?
Oh my god no!
What music do you listen to?
I’ve recently got back into the Beatles in a major way. It’s really a bottomless pool with them.
What do you plan on doing after the Between the bays festival?
I’m going to retreat back to the beach house and drink a robust Shiraz.
