Interview with Chris Flaskas

Sunshine Coast Based multi instrumentalist sensation Chris Flaskas has just released his new single and film clip 'When The Gold Is Gone' and has just begun a tour round Australia. Tomatrax caught up with Chris to ask a few questions.

What inspired you to become a musician?
My Dad has been a professional musician since he was young so that set me up probably before I even knew it. My inspiration to write and present the multi faceted act that I am today has stemmed from immense amounts of traveling to very unique and electric areas of this earth. Seeing life from other eyes has assisted the want too express my genre and write stories from the heart.

When did you write your first song?
It would have been around 7-8 years ago actually when I picked up all the instrument I no know and began this journey. That was when I began writing.

You've been on tour in support of your latest EP, how has that been going?
The touring has been sooooo much fun its been extremely positive as I have had a huge amount of support. I do tho miss my family I'm just a big softy haha.

What made you pick 'When the gold is gone' as the EP's title track?
Its all about timing for me and from the moment the pen hit the paper and When The Gold Is Gone unfolded the whole process till now has been seamless and just felt right. Therefore it's the perfect star of the show.

Where was the video for 'When the gold is gone' taken?
I shot the film all around my home town being the Sunshine Coast Qld in the places that are most sacred to me.

You use a variety of instruments to produce your sound such as the didgeridoo and the Hawaiian style lap steel slide, is it hard to get the different instruments to work together?
At first I battled it but was so enthusiastic in the learning process that the love and joy for playing everything at once out weighed the time to time frustrations. It taught me a lot about life its all about feeling and letting go. Sometimes thinking or being stuck in the head can limit us.

Do you have a favourite instrument to play?
Didgeridoo by far this instrument is extremely sacred and medicinal too me. It is really quite a deep instrument in all that it represents I guess that is also a part of the honour and joy of playing it and its quite incredible to see the huge amount of people that connect to it.

Is there any instrument you've always wanted to play but are yet to learn?
Not yet I've given most of them a crack but yes would love to expand to play professional kit drum and trumpet one day.

Do you ever listen to your own music?
All the time. I listen to it to draw inspiration from my creations and to also better myself for future works.

What other music do you listen to?
So so many genres and artists. My favs are John Butler and Xavier Rudd just to name a couple. I really do love and listen to so much music its crazy.

What do you have planned after your tour?
A new Single release, Festivals and touring future around Australia to the places I haven't reached yet.
