Interview with Cathii Hoare from The Insatiables

Perth based indie-popsters The Insatiables have just released their second EP 'Impatient Creatures', with a live launch May 22 at The Rosemount Hotel. Tomatrax caught up with Cathii Hoare, lead singer from the band, to ask a few questions.

You're just released second EP, how does it feel to have it finished?
It feels good, like another chapter has been completed...not necessarily closed but it feels like there's a form of closure after seeing it all ready to go for everyone to enjoy and knowing how far it's all come from the riffs the tunes all started as.
How does the EP compare with your debut?
Like most bands debut EPs ours too was a mixed bag. Impatient Creatures however is a far more focused set of tracks, we had more of an idea this time round on where we wanted these tracks to go.

Where did the title Impatient Creatures come from?
From that feeling that dwells in all the songs on the EP, and i suppose more so from a feeling that resides in me. Every song is about some sort of transition, the realisation that one is needed and the urge to make it. Impatient Creatures sums up that reflection and urge for me.

What made you pick 'I know my scars' as the single?
We felt "I Know My Scars" treads a good balance between what we do in terms of upbeat but still staying true to that moody style present across the EP as a whole. We also know that like us most people dig singing along to a good ooh ooh oooh line haha.

You'll be playing a launch show later this month, what can fans expect from your show?
Some new additions to our band with our new bassist and keys players Steve and Stu joining us on stage! Lots of energy and a new vibe to our music in general, a little less of a traditional band feel and more of a spacious sonic landscape than our debut EP, Let Go of Limbo.

What is the music scene in Perth like?
Love the Perth music scene and I get the vibe around town that Perth musicians are proud of our city and the music that's created here. It's true that Perth has seen some venue's close in recent months however there are some good crew out there opening new places all the time. We have a lot to look forward to here in Perth.

Where did the name The Insatiables come from?
From a hunger for everything! I think the name just made sense to me for us as a group, we're all people who i think love to squeeze the joy out of life and are constantly pushing forwards...plus it's just a great word!

Do you ever listen to your own music?
Yes, but part of me feels like it will never be for enjoyment unfortunately. It's hard to listen to my own work without constantly criticising it. I do love to listen to our music as a whole, definitely instrumentally, but i feel i will always hear things i would add or change in my own lyrics, harmonies or melodies. Like it's never truly finished, which makes listening objectively hard in that respect.

What other music do you listen to?
Little bit of everything really, I've just always been a sucker for a rolling melody. I could list a lot of names but i don't really stick to a specific genre. Dolly Parton, Husky, Julian Casablancas, Seeker Lover Keeper, Johnny Cash, Sia and Meatloaf to give an idea of the kind of artists that have earned my love.

Now that the EP is finished what do you plan on doing next?
Lots of gigging, kicking about Perth singing our songs! Possibly a tour interstate would be an awesome adventure for us that is possibly on the cards too!
