Having built a home studio that claims 80% of his bedroom, Sydney’s Brave is a true pioneer of democratised production. Writing, recording, performing and producing his own material since the age of 15 the neo-soul songwriter and beat extraordinaire is finally set to release his debut EP this August. Tomatrax caught up with Brave to talk about his music.
What inspired you to become a Musician?
I wanted to be the piano man Bernie Taupin refers to in Elton John’s ‘Tiny Dancer’.
What made you pick the name ‘Brave’?
It’s descriptive of who I am, serves me as a mantra, and sets the mood for what I’m trying to inspire through my words.
Why did you pick an alias rather than use your name?
My name is literally the Maori word for Brave.
What made you pick ‘What about me?’ as your first single?
Good energy, good message and is a complete contrast to the current popular sound.
What’s it like to have your first single out?
Kinda feels like saying hello.
You have an EP coming out soon, how will the rest of the EP compare with ‘What about me?’
A complete variety of strong songs that are obviously from the same place. I have a definite sound.
What was it like to play at the ‘Vivid’ festival?
We had one hell of a light show.
What’s it like to have a bedroom studio?
You simply can’t beat the convenience of having a song hit you and then be able to go sit down and start putting it down.
Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night and feel the need to record a new song?
Endlessly.
Do you ever listen to your own music?
Endlessly.
What other music do you listen to?
At the moment I’m listening to 5ths/Jarryd Klapper, an old Animal Collective record and a blank cd titled ‘Jaime’s mix’.
What do you plan on doing once the EP is out?
Choose the tracks for the next one, and start writing the one after that.
