Interview Etiquette: Things to Do Before and After

Posted on the 25 September 2024 by Prashant Kumar

Interviewing for a new job is nerve-racking. You want to make the best possible impression on the employer, so you stand out from other applicants. Practicing good interview etiquette can help you look polished, professional, and enthusiastic. Here are important things you should do before and after the interview to increase your chances of getting hired.

Before the Interview

Research the Company

One of the most important things you can do to prepare for an interview is research the company you're interviewing with. At a minimum, visit the company website and read through the About Us and Careers sections. This will give you key background information on the company's mission, values, history, products/services, and open positions.

Practice Responding to Common Questions

You can expect to be asked common interview questions like "What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?" or "Tell us a bit about yourself". Practice responding to questions like these aloud. Come up with succinct yet thorough answers that focus on the qualifications relevant to the job. Avoid rambling or including unnecessary details. The more you practice these answers, the more confident and comfortable you'll feel responding in the actual interview.

Prepare Questions to Ask the Interviewer

Towards the end of the interview, you'll usually have a chance to ask your own questions. Come prepared with a few thoughtful, engaging questions that show your enthusiasm for the company. Ask about challenges facing the department, training opportunities, or company culture. Avoid questions with simple yes or no answers. And stay away from questions about salary and benefits until an offer is made.

Gather Important Documents

Make sure you have all the paperwork you'll need for the interview packed neatly in a folder or bag. This includes extra copies of your resume, a list of references, your portfolio or work samples, and any other requested application documents.

Dress Professionally

You want to make a great first impression, so dress professionally for the interview. Wear clean, wrinkle-free clothing in the style customary for your industry. Opt for more formal business attire in fields like law, banking, and finance. For creative roles, business casual is probably fine. Just avoid casual clothing like jeans, shorts, or revealing outfits.

Arrive Early

Make sure you know exactly where your interview is being held and how to get there. Then plan to arrive about 10-15 minutes early. This will ensure you have time to find parking, locate the right office, and relax before the interview starts.

After the Interview

Send a Thank You Note

One of the most important post-interview etiquette tips is sending a thank you email within 24 hours. Keep the note brief but specific - thank the interviewer for their time and reiterate your interest in and qualifications for the role. Sending a prompt thank you demonstrates professionalism and enthusiasm. If you aren't sure what to write, check out this guide on how to write thank you email.

Follow Up if You Don't Hear Back

If you don't receive any communication from the company within the timeframe they specified, it's appropriate to follow up. Send an email checking in on the status of the hiring decision and reaffirming your interest in the role. If you still don't hear back after following up once, just continue moving forward in your job search.

By following these interview etiquette tips before and after your interview, you'll make a great impression and boost your chances of landing the job! Showing up prepared, dressed professionally, and sending prompt thank you notes demonstrate you have the skills and motivation to succeed.
