Surfing has always been the epitome of cool. From the freedom of the ocean to the relaxed attitude towards life we could all learn a great deal from those who take to the waves. Fashion has always worked hard to emulate surfer style but it has never been quite on the money. If you want surfer style you better talk to an actual surfer. Enter Australian surfing royalty Luke Stedman. Former WT competitor and general rock star, Stedman has launched the latest collection of his clothing label Instead We Smile. Man of Many hooked up with Stedman to discuss, clothes, surf and Miley Cyrus.
How did you get from pro surfer to fashion designer?
I really wanted to create something that was personal to me. Something that would mirror my aesthetic turn-ons and be my take on an overall lifestyle.
What influences your designs?
I’m influenced by creations. People whom create and bring life to an idea, from artists and entrepreneur’s to friends and family and also this universe that we live in. The ocean is also a huge part of my life and I love everything that happens in and around it. There is a so much energy in the ocean and it definitely fuels my design process.
Name a song that best describes the personality of the your label – Insted We Smile?
I’m such a huge fan of Joy Division and have watched most things relating to Ian Curtis and his music has inspired me a lot but I’m not too sure if one song describes Insted We Smile. There is a Queens song ‘Make it Wit Chu’ which is fun, sexy and positive which is what I try to instill into Insted We Smile.
What’s your favorite surf spot?
I love surfing my home break more than anything. The run down to the beach from my house, surfing with friends. It’s always good times even when the surf is awful.
What do you like to do when the surf’s flat?
I still love to be around the ocean when its tiny. It’s just a more relaxing experience which we all need. We all need to relax.
What’s your favorite item in your wardrobe right now?
Without a doubt a Kris Van Assche shirt that my girl bought for me. Its D O P E.
Who would be your pick for “the best dressed man in surfing”?
Ozzie Wright is the coolest and best dressed surfer in the world and is one of my dearest friends.
Name one product no man should live without?
Well I don’t know about most men but I could not live without my stereo. Music makes my world turn around much more smoothly.
If for the rest of your life you had access to a free personal chef, chauffeur, or masseuse, which would you choose?
I’ll take the chef but as long as they clean up after themselves. I hate cleaning.
Who would win a cagefight between Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus?
Well after seeing Miss Cyrus on the MTV Awards I would pick her as I think she would twerk poor Bieber out no?
