Inquiring Minds Want to Know: Has Venus Williams Won the French Open?

By Jen Campbell @TennisLife_Mag

American player Venus Williams has contributed immensely to women’s tennis. The 40-year-old player has won seven Grand Slam titles in her career and a total of 49 singles titles on the women’s circuit. She has dominated the courts at the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open in her long illustrious career.

However, Venus Williams has not enjoyed much success at the Australian Open and the French Open. Speaking of her performances at the French Open, the closest she has come to winning was back in 2002, when she made it to the finals, only to lose to her sister, Serena Williams.

Venus Williams’ best performances at Roland Garros

Besides reaching the final in 2002, she has reached the quarters on four occasions: in 1998, 2000, 2004, and 2006. However, in the last five years, Williams has been unable to impress in the French capital. Her best performances have been in 2016 and 2017 when she reached the fourth round.

Nonetheless, Venus Williams has been and continues to be a real asset to tennis. Her success is not easily achievable, and not many players have been able to win such honors. From all the success she has earned at the Grand Slam events, the French Open happens to be the tournament she has witnessed fewer accomplishments.

Although she has never won the Australian Open, she has often gone into the tournament. In her last 13 attempts at the French Open, she has made it to the second week only on two instances, in 2016 and 2017.

Venus Williams’ recent results have been average

In recent tournaments, she’s received wild cards at the Madrid Open and played in the WTA 250 event in Parma. Unfortunately, she lost in the initial rounds in both events.

She began her season in Australia and did not live up to her usual standards. She has failed to impress in the tournaments since the start of the season and has been unable to cause upsets.

In last year’s delayed French Open, she suffered defeat in the opening round. It will be interesting to see how she fairs this year at Roland Garros. The draws will be out the next weekend and she will hope to create headlines this year.
