“Index Slides as Selling Sparks”

Bourse regressed to red again as investors prompted to sell on Diversified Financials and Banking sector counters.

Index opened on a solid footing and remained high during the initial hour but as investors resorted to book profits index tumbled down. The downtrend persisted through the rest of the session with the index closing at 8,814 losing 57 points. During the day, Treasury related counters witnessed selling as fears on local debt restructuring began to resurface while LIOC too plunged down with investors anticipating reduction in fuel prices.

Meanwhile, turnover budged lower compared to the previous session and recorded at LKR 2.3Bn (+8% cf. monthly average turnover of LKR 2.1Bn) while it was mainly led by the Transportation sector with the buy-back of 2.5Mn shares of EXPO by the parent company at LKR 210.0 per share. Further, Energy sector contributed 22% to overall turnover.
