Long before Styria became part of Austria, the mountains and lowlands were inhabited by man. During the Ice Age hunting tribes from what are now known as the Balkan states, followed cave dwelling bears high into the mountains and subsequently settled in the fertile lowlands between the peaks.

Dachstein

One of these high peaks is Dachstein in upper Styria, some 2995 metres above sea level and a popular destination for a day trip out. Here man and nature have come together to create the incarnations in ice of the Mammuthohle (Mammouth Cave) and Rieseneishohle (giant ice cave).

Dachstein Ice Caves

The ice caves at Dachstein are arguably one of Austria’s most impressive attractions. Deep in the Dachstein glacier, the ice caves feature a spectacular display of naturally occurring and man-made ice sculptures.

With famous cartoon characters, colonial columns and breath-taking displays of grandeur, the caves enchant and enthral all ages.

Specially guided tours from 2700 metres above sea level provide a most spectacular and informative experience.

Useful tip – go through Mammuthohle first, Rieseneishohle is well worth the wait!
