Atari has put out Sunnyvale, which is a huge new experience in The Sandbox metaverse. The virtual area is a tribute to the golden age of video games and to the early days of Atari.
Alpha Season 3 of Animoca Brands’ The Sandbox has come out with 90 new metaverse experiences. In The Sandbox, Atari owns a lot of Land, which is the same thing as real estate. In an interview with GamesBeat, Tyler Drewitz, the director of Atari X, said that the company is now showing that it is willing to put money into building that Land.
This year is Atari’s 50th anniversary. It was started in New York and is still one of the most well-known consumer brands and game developers. The Atari Sunnyvale experience is made up of nine old Atari games, such as a full version of Crystal Castles.
“We think people are going to value the experience and it was worth taking time to do it.” Drewitz said.
Players can also go on adventures and play games like hide-and-seek, and the winners get prizes. In Crystal Castles, players race through a castle that looks like a maze, collecting jewels and fighting enemies. This is just the first in a series of games.
The Sandbox is an immersive virtual environment where users can build virtual worlds and games and take part in other people’s experiences. The voxel gaming platform lets artists make, play, share, collect, and trade their creations in a decentralized environment where ownership and copyright are protected because each in-game object has a unique and unchangeable blockchain identity.
Drewitz added, “We are incredibly excited to share Atari Sunnyvale with The Sandbox community, and we know it will draw more Atari fans to the growing platform. I am particularly eager for people to experience the deep, wondrous envirnments based on our games that have been created by our development partner, Metatworld Entertainment.”
Atari sold some of its land in The Sandbox, but it still owns a lot of land in The Sandbox and will continue to work with partners to make new things for players to do in the coming years. Wade Rosen, CEO of Atari, said in a statement,“The vision that the team at The Sandbox has, and the creativity and energy they bring to the project, makes them an ideal partner for Atari. We will continue to experiment and find new ways to bring programming to the open world, and look forward to bringing more experiences to players.”
Atari X is a project that brings together all of Atari’s blockchain interests into one business that is completely run by Atari. It was started four years ago by former CEO Fred Chesnais, who left the company 14 months ago. Drewitz joined the company in March (after 2.5 years of consulting) and has taken it in a new direction.
The Atari X project is building a complete blockchain ecosystem that combines gameplay, utility, and community. This ecosystem will keep blockchain a key part of Atari’s business and long-term strategy through a variety of Web3 development partnerships.
Drewitz said, “The reason that we created this, which is one of the first things that I created when I came on board, is that Atari was such an early mover when we did license deals and partnerships, starting with this one in 2019. We did license deals with Zed Run with Atari skins, and Atari was a first mover in blockchain. But what we didn’t have was a community or anything else.”
“As you probably know, it’s very divisive between gaming and blockchain gaming and there isn’t that big of a middle ground with a crossover for fans. So with these partnerships, we were creating, but we didn’t really have a place to interact with the cool projects and the cool technologies that were being used. We just gave them the Atari name and moved on,” he said.
